Find the Right Mattress For Your Sleeping Position

right mattress

There is never a one size fits all solution to our needs. Take sleeping, for instance. It seems like a mattress is just a mattress as long as it’s comfortable, but finding the right mattress for your sleep position is key.

What is comfortable, though? We all have different ideas of what it constitutes. Some people think a hard mattress is as comfortable as it gets, and others want to feel like they are sinking into a cloud.

As you can see, picking the right mattress is very important. How do you choose the right one? By evaluating your sleep needs.

The importance of the right mattress

It’s no secret that people are seriously sleep-deprived these days, and it’s also becoming common knowledge that sleep is one of the most important pillars of good health.

To get the right sleep, it all starts with the right mattress. What you’re looking for is the right mattress for every sleeper.

When you find the right mattress for your own personal sleep style, you are already more than halfway there to improving your sleep and, thus, your health.

Knowing your sleep style

You probably already know how you prefer to sleep. In case you don’t, try to take note of your desired position. Ask your partner to tell you, or make a video to see for yourself if you sleep alone.

You may be either a side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper or all of the above sleeper. It is important to know this because you need to make sure you pick the right mattress to keep your spine aligned.

Since your pressure points will vary depending on your sleep position, you will need the right firmness for each. If you sleep on your side, for example, your hips will need to sink into the mattress somewhat while still staying firm enough to support your spine so it doesn’t curve.

If you sleep on your back, then there is a natural curvature of your spine that needs to remain. If your butt sinks in the mattress too deeply, it will throw this curvature off, and you’ll end up with back pain.

When to change your mattress

Generally speaking, you should be changing your mattress once every seven years or so. This is highly dependant on how it sleeps, though. If you are already experiencing back pain or having trouble sleeping, you may want to make the switch sooner.

If you’ve recently slept in a hotel and found yourself sleeping deeply and feeling pain-free the next day, then that is a sure sign that your mattress is ready to be replaced.

If you dread getting home to your sagging, lumpy mattress, well, there isn’t much that could be sadder than that!

Don’t just dream of having a good night’s sleep. Make it happen by picking the right mattress for your specific needs and get your sleep back on track. Your health does depend on your mattress.
