When it comes to coffee, I’m all about espresso. I also can’t resist a little foamy milk to go along with it, so I love to start my day with a latte. While I would happily buy barista-made espresso drinks daily, this is not the economy in which to indulge my love of store-bought coffee. Thankfully, I’ve figured out how to get my gourmet caffeine fix handcrafted at home. The secret is a quality automatic espresso machine, and KitchenAid has just come out with a new line designed for even the most discerning espresso drinkers.
When I first tried to make good coffee at home, I started with whole coffee beans, a small grinder and a French press. The trick to a great cup of coffee was fresh-ground beans, so I would grind them for every cup. From there, I upgraded to a basic espresso machine, but even with whole beans and a standalone grinder, I still found myself chasing that fresh, café-quality espresso experience.
Finally, I treated myself to an automatic espresso machine and a milk frother, and that was when I finally found my perfect at-home espresso formula. The money I spent on that machine was quickly recouped by what I was saving by skipping my daily trip to the neighbourhood café. Now, my homemade coffee has just gotten another upgrade with the beautiful new KitchenAid K3 Fully Automatic Espresso Machine.
Beautiful and Compact
The KitchenAid K3 is perfect for those of us who struggle with minimal counter space. It’s narrower than my last machine and 25% smaller than its predecessors, which means it takes up surprisingly little room on my exceedingly small countertop, while still delivering an impressive coffee experience.
Even better, KitchenAid has managed to build in the features I used to need separate appliances for. The AutoMilk System and Pannarello Auto Steam Wand make it easy to create barista-style microfoam for milk-based drinks. I’ve now been able to retire my standalone milk warmer and frother, helping me recover even more precious counter space back in my kitchen.
I’ve always appreciated a beautiful appliance; why should things just be functional when they can also be fabulous? The K3 has a sleek, streamlined look that feels more like a stylish kitchen upgrade than another bulky gadget. It’s also the first espresso machine I’ve seen that comes in white, or Porcelain as the brand calls it, and it looks like it was made with my white kitchen countertop and cupboards in mind.
It’s Oh So Quiet
A morning coffee ritual is supposed to ease you into the day, but the sounds of some espresso machines can make it feel like a construction zone has taken over your kitchen. Not so with the K3. It’s easily the quietest automatic espresso machine I’ve ever used. It’s literally Quiet Mark Certified and is among the quietest machines in its category, which makes a noticeable difference in everyday use.
This would be an especially useful machine for a busy household with mixed schedules. Early birds can get their morning caffeine fix without waking up their loved ones, and night-owl can get their after dark caffeine fixes without the accompanying cacophony.
It Makes Delicious Espresso
Of course, none of the bells and whistles matter if the coffee itself isn’t good. Fortunately, the K3 delivers on that front, too. Its IntelliGrind and Aroma Balance Systems are designed to automatically adjust to the unique characteristics of the beans, helping produce a consistently balanced cup without requiring you to become an expert in grind size, extraction or espresso ratios. Like I said before, the secret to a great coffee is freshly ground beans, and that’s one of my favourite things about moving from a more traditional espresso setup to a fully automatic machine; the beans are freshly ground for every serving of espresso. Put in good beans, choose your drink and let the machine takes care of the rest.
It Makes More Than Just Espresso
For anyone who thinks an espresso machine is only useful for morning shots, the K3 opens up a much bigger world of coffee possibilities. With just a touch of a button, it’s so easy to toggle between types of drinks, including latte, cappuccino, ice coffee or a straightforward espresso. The K3 can make more than 15 types of drinks, and there is also plenty of room to customize by easily adjusting things like strength, volume and temperature, and even saving custom recipes.
That flexibility is amazing when it comes to hosting; I can make just about any kind of coffee drink my guests may be craving. It also gives me the flexibility to make different drinks for myself, depending on my own moods. Most mornings call for a latte. Sometimes an affogato (espresso poured over ice cream) is what I’m craving. And when the weather heats up, I’m more interested in an iced coffee instead of a traditional hot drink. The K3 has a Dedicated Iced Coffee Setting, designed to brew at a lower temperature for lighter, more refreshing coffee and espresso drinks served over ice, making it much easier to get that coffee-shop-style iced drink at home. In the past, I was simply brewing my espresso hot and pouring it over ice, which leaving me with a watered-down drink and a disappointing loss of flavour. Those days are now behind me with the K3.
Your Coffee Shop, Without the Coffee Shop Price
The KitchenAid K3 truly combines the convenience of an automatic machine with the kind of customization that lets you actually have fun with your coffee. I can stick to my daily latte routine, experiment with different beans, try an iced coffee when the mood strike me, and make whatever caffeinated drink my guests may desire, all without ever leaving my kitchen.
And while the upfront cost of a quality espresso machine can feel like an investment, my experience has been that it can pay for itself surprisingly quickly when it replaces regular café runs. That’s what happened with my last automatic espresso machine, and the K3 has me doubling down on making coffee at home every single day. This machine makes delicious coffee, and there is no compromise when it comes to flavour and that satisfaction that can only come from a great coffee.
The KitchenAid Espresso Collection is now available in three models: the KF2, starting at $899.99; the KF3, starting at $999.99; and the KF4, starting at $1,299.99. Any of these machines would be a great investment for anyone who loves their coffee but is tired of paying coffee-shop prices every morning. Join me in bringing the café home; it might just be one of the better upgrades you can make to your kitchen.
