Gang of Youths Live at the Danforth Music Hall

Australian rock group Gang of Youths shook the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on May 6, 2022. I had first heard about Gang of Youths from a number of music-savvy friends, so I was excited to finally have the opportunity to see them live, especially following the release of their latest album Angel in Realtime. Full of honest and cinematic-sounding tracks, Angel in Realtime is a body of work that begs to be experienced in large venues, with the echo of a crowd singing it back. Seeing the band bring the album to life at Danforth Music Hall did not disappoint.

Frontman David Le’aupepe brought the energy as he strutted about the stage with some very slick dance moves. As a performer, Le’aupepe seemed to wear his heart on his sleeve. His stage banter was honest and quippy, and he frequently got carried away in telling stories to the crowd.

It’s this energy that made the show memorable – and what makes what could easily be another “anthemic rock band” a band full of soul. If you have the opportunity to see Gang of Youths live, do yourself a favour, and have the best time of your life.
