Album Review: Alan Goldberg – CreateBecome

Austin-based composer and multi-genre instrumentalist Alan Goldberg explores themes of presence, personal growth, and creative transformation on his latest album CreateBecome, released March 10. A blend of progressive rock, jazz fusion, swing, and ambient textures, this eleven-track record is Goldberg’s fifth full-length release and perhaps his most introspective to date.

Goldberg, whose roots trace back to classic rock and progressive influences like Yes, Jethro Tull, Chick Corea, and Frank Zappa, brings a seasoned perspective to his work. CreateBecome is both a conceptual meditation and an emotional journey—shaped by decades of listening, playing, and reflecting. The album’s title reflects a personal mantra of Goldberg’s, one that serves as both a creative prompt and philosophical anchor throughout the record.

The compositions are centered around the piano, which acts as the album’s emotional and structural core. Through improvisational solos and ensemble interplay, the piano weaves in and out of supporting instrumentation that includes guitar, strings, and a full jazz ensemble palette. The result is a collection that straddles the worlds of progressive rock and jazz fusion, often shifting between rhythmic intensity and ambient introspection.

Songs like “Unbroken Chain” set the thematic tone early, establishing motifs of continuity, decision-making, and evolution that recur across the record. The music flows as a kind of sonic narrative, with variations in tempo, mood, and instrumentation reflecting the dynamic process of inner and outer transformation. Goldberg’s approach to arrangement—capturing live piano performances first, then layering supporting elements—gives the album a sense of spontaneity and openness, even within its structured form.

Listeners familiar with Goldberg’s previous work, including Passion No Distraction and Small Acts, will recognize his affinity for blending genres and emotional textures. While earlier releases leaned toward meditative or ambient listening, CreateBecome feels more exploratory and assertive, drawing from the spirit of 1970s prog while maintaining a modern improvisational sensibility.

This is not an album built for casual radio play or easily digestible singles. Rather, it invites immersion—ideal for those drawn to long-form instrumental storytelling and musical experimentation. Fans of artists like The Dear Hunter, Circa Survive, or Between the Buried and Me may find common ground in Goldberg’s layered compositions and philosophical approach.

In CreateBecome, Goldberg offers a personal yet accessible musical experience—rooted in reflection, shaped by decades of musical evolution, and driven by a continuous desire to grow, both creatively and spiritually.
