Review – The Intercontinental Madrid

Recently I had the pleasure of travelling throughout the north of Spain.  I found myself enraptured by the smaller cities filled with history, and the rolling hills of Verdejo wine country.  However, when my journey came to an end, I relished the chance to be back in Madrid, ready to explore the Spanish capital.  And the Intercontinental Madrid became the best home base for those last few days in Spain.

First Impressions

The Intercontinental Madrid presents an impressive façade.  This cosmopolitan retreat regularly plays host to visiting dignitaries, politicians, military officials and business professionals, and it shows.

Stepping into the marble-lined lobby, a sense of occasion immediately takes over.  But somehow, the Intercontinental Madrid feels welcoming, not intimidating, and that has everything to do with the front desk and concierge staff.  I was spotted looking lost in the bustling lobby, and quickly checked in and guided to my beautiful room several floors up.

The Room

At the Intercontinental Madrid, the rooms  are decorated in that classical style you can expect from an an IHG property.  The rooms are stylish and comfortable with luxurious textiles and fine wood features, providing the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring vibrant Madrid. You can catch up with work at the large desk, then take a long soak in the generous bath in the exquisite marble bathroom. I had the chance to experience both a classic room and a beautiful suite at the Intercontinental Madrid, and both were beautiful, comfortable, and homey while feeling luxurious.

The Location

The Intercontinental Madrid sits on Paseo De La Castellana 49 in the heart of Madrid, a short distance from the city’s high-end fashion boutiques, on Calle de Serrano.  While Gran Via may be one of Madrid’s most famous streets for strolling, dining and shopping, Serrano offers a more low key and relax experience, and it’s just minutes from the hotel.

The hotel was steps from the city’s outdoor sculpture museum, Museo de la Escultura Abstracta, the National Museum of Natural Sciences, and a short drive away from world famous Prado museum, and many other impressive Spanish landmarks.

The area around the intercontinental also hosted various embassies and other historic buildings with stunning architecture, upscale shopping, and many fine dining, and even Michelin star restaurants.  In fact, on my last night in Madrid, I treated myself to a beautiful dinner at Bibo Madrid by Dani Garcia, which was practically across the street from the hotel.

The Experience

One of the things I love most about staying at Intercontinental Hotels around the world is, no matter where I am, I know that my stay will be comfortable and I will be looked after.  The rooms will be clean comfortable and well maintained.  The staff will be courteous, accommodating, and will always go above and beyond for my comfort.  And when it comes down to it, that’s truly all anyone wants when we’re far from home.  That, and delicious room service breakfast.

And of course, the Intercontinental Madrid hit all of these points out of the park, just like my past experiences at IHG properties in other places.  I even got the chance to try an authentic Spanish omelette when I ventured downstairs for breakfast before exploring the area around the hotel.

The Verdict

The Intercontinental Madrid is another gem in a portfolio of jewels.  From check in to check out, I felt very safe and taken care of, ready to enjoy every minute in my home away from home.  All in all, I highly recommend the Intercontinental Madrid for your next trip to the Spanish capital.  For more information, check out their website below.
