Bob Moses and Cannons Move History

The Afterglow tour brings dream pop and live indie electronica together, at last.

While LA’s Cannons are purveyors of mellow, moody dream pop lacquered by Michelle Joy’s smoky vocals, Bob Moses bring sometimes hard but never unfriendly house beats. A comedown and a come-up pairing on some odd playlist co-headlines a tour! What will happen?

Cannons came on and showed that they have more than a random scattering of fans in Toronto as the band’s names were called out in cheers. Loving You, from their 2023 album Heartbeat Highway. Vibey Starlight caused a sea of swaying shoulders, while the stoic dude of the band, guitarist Ryan Clapham, kept in place.  Founding member, Paul Davis, was absent following an accident in Dallas that required emergency brain surgery. Our wishes for a speedy and easy recovery go out to Ryan and Cannons. These Nights delivered a great beat and mood as Joy leaned on her very own streetlight and hanging moon. While the Cannons set covered all their releases, it was dominated by songs from their latest album, Everything Glows. Personal highlights from this album included Starlight and Carousel.

While the concept of the tour is a co-headline, staging alone could be the main reason Bob Moses has closed each night of this show.  While fellow Angeleno, marine electronica artist Oxis performed prior to Cannons, the ‘headlining sets’ were fairly equal in number of tracks and set duration.

Bob Moses also has a new album to promote. New- ish. BLINK was released last October, and five of the songs in their set highlighted their latest release. Walking out to pulsing lights, singer and guitarist Tom Howie and producer/keyboardist Jimmy Vallance (accompanied by bassist, Julio Tavarez and drummer, Joe Zizzo) launched into new song, Time of Your Life. Continuing with another BLINK track, Waiting on the World, Bob Moses skewed to a collab, performing a stunning version of Elderbrook’s Inner Light. Their 16-song set covered selections from all five albums and some of their EPs, including their Grammy-winning remix of Tearing Me Up. A nice spin on the night was a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ Closer. The night ended with their latest album’s title and closing track.

Bob Moses and Cannon’s Afterglow tour continues through the US, winding down in California on May 2.
