Beloved Toronto Spin Instructor Tyrell Désean Becomes a Hit on Apple Fitness+

Just in time for all the fitness-filled resolutions, the anticipated Apple Fitness+ launched late last year.

The Apple Watch-based fitness app brings studio-style workouts – including high intensity interval training (HIIT), strength, yoga, dance, core, cycling, treadmill, rowing, and mindful cool down – hosted by a team of top trainers to iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

A quick favourite is Tyrell Désean, a former dancer-turned-spinning instructor who elevates moods and tones bodies with his Apple Fitness+ cycling classes. The vibrant New York native became a celebrated spin instructor at Soul Cycle Toronto, where he lived for years before the Apple gig, which now sees him in Los Angeles (much to the collective sadness of his Toronto cult following).

For those in the dark, Apple Fitness+ is the first fitness experience built around Apple Watch. It incorporates personal workout metrics from Apple Watch for a tailored, immersive, and highly addictive experience. Désean’s cycling classes are motivating and high-energy, yet lighthearted and fun; the type of sweat sessions that keep you coming back for more – and with a smile on your face.

Désean expressed his appreciation for his new Apple Fitness+ trainer status on Instagram on December 14, sharing a preview video and writing, “Seeing this preview is just another reminder of how much I really love what I do and I feel blessed that I’ve had the opportunity to share my life experiences and passions with others. But let me tell you… I never thought in a million years I would be here in this moment, with @applefitnessplus!”

All Apple Fitness+ workouts are accompanied by music that keeps motivation levels high – whether that means the top hits from artists of today or nostalgic favourites from times past. Users can choose from nine different styles – including latest hits, chill vibes, upbeat anthems, pure dance, throwback hits, everything rock, Latin grooves, hip hop/R&B, and top country – and see the full workout playlist before they start.

Cyclists can expect a reliably well-curated playlist in Désean’s classes. In combination with his infectious energy, the music – whether its Latin beats or dance – helps keep motivation levels high, as it takes cyclists on an adrenaline-filled journey.

“Our diverse team weaves in all kinds of music to the workouts to inspire and motivate people to work harder and last longer than they ever thought they could. When you hear the beat drop, you can just feel the energy come off the screen,” says Désean.“Music, combined with the metrics from Apple Watch that display onscreen, is a really unique way to help get you through the workout!”

For the competitive set, the cycling workouts have an optional Burn Bar that shows, in real time, how a user’s effort stacks up against anyone who has previously completed the same workout. With Activity Sharing, users can allow friends and family to see Fitness+ workouts completed, and workouts can also be shared to social media channels.

For a feel for what you can expect from Désean’s spin class, he keeps his inspirational Instagram account updated with videos of him in action in Apple’s state-of-the-art studio.

While he may have swapped Toronto for L.A., Désean shows his love for Toronto via his devotion to the Toronto Raptors – an appreciated consolation for his fitness-loving fans in Toronto.
