The new edition of Immersive Van Gogh has made its Canadian premiere at Lighthouse ArtSpace in Toronto! This innovative exhibition invites audiences to go beyond the paintings and step inside the mind of one of history’s most beloved artists through stunning digital projections of over 140 of his masterpieces, all set to a captivating soundtrack. The New Immersive Van Gogh: The Next Chapter opened on April 11 at the Lighthouse ArtSpace on 1 Yonge Street Toronto.
As expected, the paintings of Van Gogh’s work are paramount to the experience, but what makes Immersive Van Gogh so interesting is the additional music, graphics, and – for this edition – a dance routing that bolster the storytelling of Van Gogh’s life. The entire experience opens to the song Amazing Grace, brutally ended with a gun shot. This scene should prepare the audience for the remaining immersive experience, which is much darker than the first version. There is an interesting use of bugs, nature and animals to depict Van Goh’s feelings throughout his life, in the various places he lived, where monumental paintings were made.
The new Immersive Van Gogh took Marco Generoso Realino, curator and CEO of Visioni Srl 3 years in concept, but only 4 months to produce. Realino tell us that he wanted to add a theme of darkness because it was a part of him no matter how he tried to stifle it. “We all have our problems and melancholy that we try to hide, but in talking about him as an artist it is important to also talk about this part.” Realino also strategically used Beethoven for some of the soundtrack as he felt that Van Gogh and Beethoven’s life parallels merited unifying the artists.
Realino had to choose over a thousand works and was able to narrow it down to just over 140 pieces. He chose to focus on the pieces most related to the most important cities where he lived and produced.
With more than 6 million people around the world having experienced the original Immersive Van Gogh, the phenomenal success of this blockbuster sensation is an unprecedented Canadian success story. The spectacular digital art exhibition, that inspired numerous copycat exhibits, was dubbed by the New York Times as best in class.
