Big Filipino Flavour at Makilala

Some people just know food, and that’s evident with the owners of Makilala.

You may know Jeff and Chef Nuit Regular from their famous institution PAI, which brings delicious Thai food to Toronto tables. They’ve opened sister restaurants Kiin, Chaiyo, Sukhothai, The Phae Tavern and more recently Makilala.

Makilala is a bright restaurant in the heart of downtown, with a karaoke machine and lots of tropical decor. More importantly than the decor, the food is absolutely delicious. The Pan de Sal buns were light and crispy, served with a caramel butter and a durian butter which was delicious. The grilled pork belly appetizer is served as two long slabs of pork belly, grilled in soy sauce, banana ketchup – meant to be shared, the dish is a must have. Want the pork with some fixings? Try the BBQ pork belly sliders, using the same cut of meat in a different way. If you’re a seafood lover, Ginataang Hipon (shrimp served in fragrant coconut milk) will satisfy even the most intense craving. If you’ve never had Lumpiang Sariwa, it could be compared to a soft, peanut sauce version of an egg roll filled with amazing vegetables that offer great crunch in its soft wheat wrapper. If you love Jolibee, and crave Filipino spaghetti, you’re in luck! It’s on the menu as Kids Spaghetti, but as an adult let me say it is more delicious than any fast food chain and still a decent portion!

With delicious food, incredible service and staff, and a nice space to slow down in the city – what’s not to love? We hope to see you at Makilala, because we’ll definitely be back!
