Top Things to Do For the First Time in Prague

In my first visit to Prague, the city took my breath away and could now be ranked as one of the most beautiful places I have visited, above Naples and Athens. Here is a list of my favourite cultural spots, and our most enjoyable dining experience.

The Prague Castle is worth booking an entire day for. While the walk up is a bit long and steep but completely worth it. The city views once at the top are extraordinary. There are 10 sites to explore including the castle, St. George’s Basilica, St. Vitus’ Cathedral, and the picture gallery. In what feels like a micro city within Prague. There are also stores, restaurants, and lots of spots to unwind amongst the gorgeous architecture. The Cathedral is one of the most stunning I have seen both inside and outside, with stunning purple glass stained windows.

A spot that seemed less popular but was spectacular is the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. The entire museum is only a few floors, in a gorgeous historic building. Exhibits included a temporary exhibit on the architecture of cottages, and permanent exhibits on 73 years of glassworks as well as the permanent exhibit Art For Life which showed the clothes and accessories of Prague women through the decades.

The restaurant Vycep Korunni was one of the best meals we had. In typical Prague fashion, the portions were hefty and hearty. We ordered the schnitzel with potatoes and picked vegetables, the chicken terrine with truffle sauce and a side of the most amazing creamed corn and leeks. For dessert, the choux pastry.

If you’re willing to take a short journey out of Prague, we recommend visiting Kutna Hora. This quaint town is a main attraction due to a silver mint where they produce Groschen coins. This region is also featured notably in the video game Kingdom Come Deliverance II. Kutna Hora has a castle, with grounds to visit and an Italian Court where you can learn about the coin smithing and leave with a. souvenir.

Not far is the Sedlec Ossuary, a church with monuments inside made of human bones to honour the dead. As a place of respect, photos cannot be taken inside. While it is a short visit, the eerie-ness is worth the experience.

Overall, Prague had more grandeur than I expected with golden overlays, stunning painted glass windows and delicious food that kept us full – sometimes until the next morning!
