The Long Awaited Return of Tegan and Sara

After almost 4 years, the twin sister duo graces the Danforth stage.

A few songs in at Tegan and Sara‘s June 15th show at the Danforth Music Hall, they told the story of their first appearance on the street, long before they became a household name. Without creating a mangled paraphrasing of it, that show included a mid-set argument which was all recorded in video for an abandoned electronic press kit. Happily, the fireworks the duo delivered were strictly via their great songs.

After their November 2022 show at the same venue was cancelled due to a bout of laryngitis flattening Tegan, they finally made it back. Bringing local favourites, Dragonette, Martina Sorbara, drummer Joel Stouffer and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Brett played songs primarily from the latest release, Twennies. Fan faves Hello and Pick Up The Phone and opener, Body 2 Body from the last release, Royal Blues were met with loud cheers. Dragonette’s energetic performance was the perfect primer.

As the stage lighting flashed and flickered, Tegan and Sara took to the stage. With loud cheer erupting from the full house, the band jumped into You Wouldn’t Like Me from the 2004 album So Jealous (reimagined last year as the acoustic, Still Jealous). Taking a turn through The Con, Tegan and Sara played Back In Your Head in between several songs off the new album, Crybaby. Backed by bassist Grant Zubritsky, drummer Adam Christgau and guitarist Kirk Schoenherr, Tegan and Sara touched on almost every one of their ten albums. Other highlights included Boyfriend from Love You To Death and The Con from the also-named album. Interspersed within was their great banter that included the long form version of the story mentioned above as well as a shout out to their foundation, created to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ women and girls.

Ending the night with a one-two encore punch of Where Does the Good Go and Stop Desire, Tegan and Sara would’ve delighted the eager crowd had they played longer. The Crybaby Tour crosses Canada until the end of July with a show in Winnipeg and picks up across the US in September.
