British rock singer Sam Fender made his long-awaited return to Toronto at the Coca-Cola Coliseum on a Friday night. It was the singer’s last show on his North American tour, which was his first time in the US/Canada in three years. The tour was supported by upcoming rock act Young Jesus. I recalled the first time I saw Sam Fender live was at the famous Horseshoe Tavern in 2019. It is remarkable to see his music reach new heights and draw bigger crowds, as he has headlined Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds festivals in recent years.
Sam Fender and his band entered the stage to a sold-out crowd of almost 8000 people who were ready to sing and rock out the night. From the moment he began performing the first song, “Angels in Lothian,” the crowd was singing the words loudly as Sam effortlessly sang with his distinctive vocals. Sam’s setlist included a balanced mix of slow and catchy songs from his discography. One of the surprises of the night was Sam playing a new song called “Talk to You,” a rocking tune with a guitar riff solo that will be included on the deluxe version of his latest album, People Watching, to be released soon.
The highlights of the night included the band bringing out Young Jesus to perform a cover of “Ohio” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young as a homage to playing in Canada. Sam Fender ended the night with one of his notable songs, “Hypersonic Missiles”, with the crowd giving a chance to sing along to the band. It was a joy to see Sam Fender’s rapid success coinciding with the arenas he’s been playing around the world. A sold-out crowd in Toronto was the perfect ending to Sam Fender’s North American Tour.
