How To Improve Your Cooking Skills in 5 Tasty Steps

For those of us who love to cook learning new skills and techniques is fun and interesting activity. By improving our meals and recipes we get to explore new flavor, create layered dishes and most of all fully enjoy the fruits of our labor. The last one being crucial for all foodies.

Now, this article is created to help you master some of the most important cooking skills through preparation of fun and tasty meals.

 

Invest in the right kitchen tools

Mastering your kitchen skills starts with having the right tools—and there’s no better way to practice than by preparing something simple yet versatile, like a mixed summer salad. With ingredients like onions, tomatoes, and peppers that all need precise slicing, it’s essential to invest in a sharp chef’s knife with a long, wide blade, and a sturdy, straight chopping board—preferably wooden for both safety and hygiene. Good tools not only make prep work easier but also improve your technique. When cutting, grip the knife with your thumb and index finger placed on the blade just above the handle, and use your other hand in the “bear claw” position to guide the veggies safely. For those taking their culinary game even further—especially aspiring bakers—investing in a micro bakery oven can be a game-changer. It allows you to bake fresh bread or pastries at a professional level right from your kitchen, making your cooking space not just functional, but truly inspiring.

 

Look for new and improved recipes

It is always a good idea to work on improving the recipes. Luckily there are a lot of great online resources. If you want to get the hottest new trends into your kitchen you should start following the latest bloggers and influencers in the industry and find out what’s trending. And let’s face it, there is no hipper food scene than the one on social media. So in order to improve on your cooking skills try implementing some of the trends in your dishes. You can opt for the new twist on the ever popular clips, something in the lines of watermelon radish clips with smoked sable and horseradish cream. To create such a meal it takes time and patience, and a great hand technique, so start packing those clips right away. 

 

Master the ingredients selection

Yes, believe it or not this is also a skill. Knowing how to create delicious meals is just half of work, picking the right ingredients is what makes them tasty and elevated. So all your cooking skills go right out the window if you have chosen the wrong ingredients. For example, when you by an avocado make sure that it is ripe, you can easily check this by gently squeezing it with the tips of your fingers as a ripe avocado will yield to firm gentle pressure in the palm of your hand.  You should also pay attention to the salt usage, opting for sea salt or low sodium salt can significantly alter your recipe, so  if you opt for this kind of transition create several test dishes until you get the taste just right. This is a very tasty way of improving you ingredients knowledge. 

 

Upgrade your pan skills

So many delicious dishes are prepared in a pan. But using it properly can be a fickle thing. So in order to master the pan game there are several things to keep in mind. First and foremost do not overcrowd it, too much food in the pan lowers its temperature. So make sure you can see the bottom of the pan when you stir. Another important tip is – switch to the ceramic pan, it’s healthiest, you need less grease and the food gets cooked faster. However, make sure you use silicone utensils and most importantly don’t get too comfortable, if not regularly checked, food can burn even in the best of pans.  A few great meals to test your pan skills are chicken curry, hummus and my favorite simple cheese omelette.

 

Get to know you acids

The right time to add acids is crucial for a tasty meal, be it vinegar or citric acid you have to learn exactly when to add them. For example a lot of savory foods benefit from the light touch of acid – you can try adding a little red wine vinegar to a beef stew or lemon juice to mayonnaise, just before serving. It is always a good idea to squeeze lemon juice into a fruit puree or fruit salad just to get that flavor to pop. This last minute acid splashes can make a world of difference taste wise.
