Alvvays are everywhere, it seems, and I’m ok with it. My neighborhood is plastered with posters promoting their new self-titled record and I can still feel the simmering buzz from their summer festival appearances. The Toronto band released a video for their infectiously sweet “Archie, Marry Me” recently, keeping us hooked on their album and reigniting the excitement for some upcoming live shows.
The video is in a similar style to their previous video for “Adult Diversopm”, keeping with the Instagram-esque grainy look and fast cuts between performance shots and general frolicking. There doesn’t seem to be much of a story, but that barely matters. It’s light and fun, which works perfectly with the bright guitars, surfy rhythms and catchy pop melody. Something about music and perfectly paired images really hits the spot for me. I imagine the person editing this video felt the same way when they nailed the shot of lead singer Molly Rankin plunging into the ocean at the exact moment of the drum break at the end of the bridge.
The song is super fun and is the perfect introduction to Alvvays for the handful of people who are still unfamiliar. There don’t appear to be too many left; the video has in the neighborhood of 40, 000 views after only a couple of weeks and their tour dates are quickly selling out.
Alvvays will be playing The Horseshoe on August 14. Good luck getting tickets!
