Volvo has revealed that it will cap the top speed its vehicles can travel at to 112 mph (180 km/hr). In a brave move, the Swedish car giant has said that all vehicles manufactured from 2021 will include the new speed restricting technology. The news comes following Volvo’s pledge that no individual will be killed or seriously injured in one of their vehicles by 2020. But will it be enough to keep drivers safe behind the wheel?
Despite Volvo planning to prohibit their vehicles from going over 112 mph, this is still significantly higher than the speed limit in most parts of the U.S. There are a few parts in rural Texas where the speed limit is 85 mph. But, for the most, the top speed limit across the country is just 70 mph. Sadly, in 2017, speeding played a role in 26% of road fatalities, according to the NHTSA. As such, enforcing stricter top speed limits in vehicles may be the only way to stop these preventable deaths from occurring.
Encouraging safer driving
Volvo has made it quite clear that it doesn’t expect it’s new technology to solve all speed-related problems. CEO Håkan Samuelsson, states that “While a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it’s worth doing if we can even save one life.” What’s more, they have identified that the behaviour exhibited by motorists also plays a significant factor in road safety. One key law drivers must adhere to is ensuring that their vehicle is road safe. Finder reports that one in every eight vehicles in the U.S. is uninsured. Yet, having insurance is the ultimate way to protect a vehicle on the road, as well as the driver. With the right insurance policy in place, the car is protected from damages and, in the event of an injury, the owner is safeguarded.
Complete road safety
Volvo is so keen to improve road safety that they’re now looking into ways to combat the other two main causes of road accidents: intoxication and distracted driving. They say that they plan to unveil new technology plans in the near future, and are aiming to use technology to change the way drivers behave behind the wheel. Should their plans be given the go-ahead, Volvo drivers could soon become some of the most protected on the road.
Volvo promises that its new speed restriction technology will help to keep America safer. However, it’s important to note that other safety measures must be taken by drivers too, including taking out valid insurance and reviewing the way in which they drive.
