It’s always amazing to showcase new talent to all of you music addicts out there, and when it’s home grown and made by a rad gal, it’s even better. Today we’ve got a great video premiere for you from Toronto singer/songwriter Audra Santa.
After 10 years of living in Australia, Audra recently moved back to Canada breaking into the Toronto music scene. While she was away, she explored different genres through a variety of musical projects, meandering along a journey that has helped shape her voice and her sound. Between her soft, smoky vocals and her genre bending musical style, Audra is beginning to cement her place in our music community.
“Cruel”, Audra’s latest single, was a musical catharsis. She recorded the song back in Melbourne, Australia, in 2016. It was the same week that marked the beginning of the end of Audra’s marriage. With life growing more complicated, Audra made her way home to Toronto, but not before taking on some musical therapy with this new song. Her producer, Tristan Hoogland, shared the song with her initially, and it immediately resonated with her. She knew it would be a way to help express the pain she felt.
Two years have now passed, and Audra is back and ready to release this amazing song. A smoldering track with smokey, sexy vocals, “Cruel” feels like it was inspired by 90s trip hop with a sultry, bluesy vibe, “Cruel” is slow and burning track that sucks you in. And the video was created to mirror the heart and soul of the song. Shot at The Darling Mansion in Toronto, a place called “the coolest, weirdest, artistically extravagant house you could imagine stepping into” (Novella), the video begins with Audra draped across the bed in the Opium Den, barely moving until the touch of a flower brings her to life. She rises and wanders around the eccentric space, taking her own Alice in Wonderland style stroll. Directed by Tom Sokalski, he and Audra collaborated to create a piece of work that they could both be proud of, that exemplified the song itself. Emphasizing the contrast between dark and light, “Cruel” is a thought-provoking piece of musical and visual art.
Said Audra, “I felt for a long time like I had two artistic personas – a light one that didn’t feel like “me” but was well received, and a dark one that I had convinced myself needed to be repressed. I tried making music I thought other people would like, but was denying my own expression. My true creative expression has always been on the intense and dark side. I realized I don’t have to be one or the other and that my intensity is nothing to be afraid of – that by not being afraid of the dark my light can shine brighter. Cruel is the first time I’ve fully expressed myself creatively, without holding back or worrying what other people think. It was the most freeing experience I’ve ever had.”
And without further ado, here is the smouldering video for “Cruel” by Audra Santa.
Cruel is available now on iTunes, Spotify and all other downloading and streaming services.
