Now that TIFF has come and gone we are left with so many great moments, from moving films, to great parties, it was another fantastic year, and one thing that we wanted to showcase were some of the best drinks we had that were inspired by the movies themselves.
A perfect match for the film, Mr. Right, in which Anna Kendrick falls for a sweet- natured hitman played by Sam Rockwell.
– 1.5 oz. Bulleit Rye Whiskey
– 0.5 oz. Lillet Rouge
– 0.5 oz. lemon juice
– 0.25 oz. Le Sirop de Monin (rose syrup; available at BYOB Cocktail Emporium) – 5 dashes rhubarb bitters
– Orange zest
Pour all ingredients save for zest into a cocktail shaker. Shake, then pour into a lowball glass and garnish with orange zest.
– 1 oz. gin
– 0.5 oz. Fernet-Branca
– Splash of Gentiane Liqueur
– 0.5 oz. chestnut liqueur
– 2 dashes black walnut bitters – Lemon twist to garnish
Stir all ingredients in a Coupe glass, and garnish with a lemon twist.
This cocktail, featuring lavender syrup, is reminiscent of Violette’s chance encounter in the South of France that ends up complicating her fortysomething life in Paris, in the film Lolo.
– 0.5 oz. gin
– 0.25 oz. lavender syrup (recipe below) – 0.5 oz. Crème Yvette
– 2 oz. cava
– 1 mint leaf
Pour gin, lavender syrup and Crème Yvette into a cocktail shaker. Shake and double-strain into a Coupe glass. Top with cava, and garnish with mint leaf.
– 3 cups water
– 3 cups sugar
– 8 grams dried lavender
Combine water and sugar in medium saucepan. Stir sugar and water over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Add lavender. Increase the heat and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 3 minutes. Transfer syrup to bowl and chill thoroughly. Cover and keep refrigerated for up to two weeks.
– 1 oz. bourbon
– 0.5 oz. Amaro Montenegro
– 0.5 oz. white vermouth
– Dash of bitters
– Lemon twist
In a lowball glass (Old Fashioned glass), pour all ingredients over ice and stir. Garnish with a lemon twist.
E36 Smoked Boulevardier
This sultry and smoky sipper couldn’t be more matched to TIFF’s opening night gala presentation of Demolition, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an investment banker that struggles to cope after the loss of his wife, and turns to building anew with the demolition of the life he once knew.
– 1 oz. Maker’s Mark
– 0.75 oz. Aperol
– 0.75 Lillet Rouge
– 2 drops smoked tincture (recipe below) – Orange twist
Pour ingredients into mixing glass, stir, and pour into a Coupe glass. Garnish with a flamed orange twist.
