Gov’t Mule started as an Allman Brothers Band side project in 1994. Founding members, guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody decided to form a power trio in the style of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience along with drummer, Matt Abts. Loud, heavy, bluesy and raw, Mule got together between tours of the members’ main bands and soon word spread and their popularity soared among jam band fans. They released two albums before making Gov’t Mule their main project in 1997. Sadly, Allen Woody died in 2000. They honoured him with a benefit concert for Woody’s daughter, followed by two tribute albums where his favourite bassists (including Cream’s Jack Bruce, John Entwistle of The Who and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers) filled in for him on record. While Haynes and Abts returned to other bands, they eventually reformed in 2003 and played with a variety of players. Today, the band roster includes Danny Louis on keys and guitar and Jorgen Carlsson on bass. Their 10th studio album, Revolution Come… Revolution Go comes out on June 9th.
They played a sold out show at the Danforth Music Hall last November 1st and hopefully will return soon.
