Things to consider when choosing a pet

Getting a family pet can be extremely rewarding and lots of fun. Some take more maintenance and looking after than others do. You must have a good idea of what you are getting into before buying. You can’t just hand them back so make sure you are fully informed. With any pet, taking out insurance should be a consideration. Vet bills don’t come cheap! Here are some things to consider if you are pondering over which pet might integrate best with your family.

Dogs

Dogs are probably one of the most popular pets. They are also one of the hardest to look after particularly when very young. Some say it is like having another baby. Consider which breed might work best with your situation. Some dogs don’t like being left alone for any length of time. Some need lots of exercise. If you work full time then a dog walker might be necessary. Dogs like lots of attention and can bring lots of love and fun to a home.

Cats

Unlike dogs, cats don’t need much attention. Whilst they need brushed and fed regularly, they don’t need walked and are usually happy to do their own thing. They can make great companions and are fairly low maintenance, though you will need to clean the cat litter out regularly!

Fish

Fish can be a really beautiful addition to your household. They are fairly easy to take care of so they are a popular choice. It is best to speak to a specialist if you want to buy some of the more unusual breeds. They can give advice on which fish are compatible with others and offer information about different foods and plants needed. There are various styles of aquarium available to purchase so it’s a good idea to do your homework first.

Rabbits

If you have small children eager to get a cute pet to cuddle and play with, a rabbit isn’t the most ideal choice. Contrary to popular belief, rabbits don’t really like being held. They are very beautiful animals and don’t take too much maintenance but they will be less entertaining than a dog for example.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are a really popular choice for families. They do like companionship though so its best you buy more than one as they can get lonely. Their cages need to be cleaned fairly regularly but they don’t take much looking after.

Hamsters

Hamsters are very cute and always a hit with kids. You will need to buy a cage and some hamster toys. They do need lots of exercise so buying a hamster wheel is a must. They can run around for hours. A hamster ball is a great idea if you want to let them out for the kids to play with. They can get into very small spaces and get lost. Putting them in a hamster ball allows them to run around and play without the fear of them running off!
