Ask anyone to name a brand of sunglasses and chances are they’ll say Ray Ban. It’s hard to think of a name more synonymous with stylish, quality eyewear.

My father used to sport a pair of classic tortoiseshell Wayfarers in the 80s. Effortlessly cool, they are the one item of his wardrobe that I still covet to this day. Desperate to own a pair of my own I gave up waiting for him to hand them down to me and bought my first pair of Ray Bans at 28. Nearly 8 years on, they remain my favourite accessory and sit at the very top of my sartorial must-have list.

For more than eighty years, the company behind some of the most legendary styles of shades has continued to stay relevant to each new generation, without ever alienating the one before. Rarely has a brand managed to target across demographics as successfully as Ray Ban does.  Every style the company produces becomes an instant classic.

So what’s the secret to their success? I believe it’s a combination of authenticity, timeless style and the ability to remain at the forefront of cultural change. With that, I give you the best of Ray Ban, past and present.

Aviator Classic

Arguably the coolest sunglasses ever created. Originally designed for U.S. aviators in 1937 to combat the blinding glare of the sun, the Aviator Classic style was immortalised by Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Sales of Aviators skyrocketed by 40% after the release of the movie in 1986 and are now the most recognisable style of sunglasses in the world.

Wayfarer Classic

My personal favourite and my go-to style for any occasion, all year round.  Designed by Raymond Stegeman in 1952, Wayfarer Classics have proven popular among celebrities, musicians, artists and anyone with impeccable fashion sense. Built as strong and sturdy as the personalities who wore them is how Ray Ban describes Wayfarers and it’s easy to see why.

Clubmaster Classic

Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses are the epitome of retro cool. Designed in 1986 and inspired by the 50’s, the unmistakable design of the Clubmaster became the signature style of cultural intellectuals the world over. An instant classic, the style was even translated into prescription eyewear.

Ray Ban Remix

Available exclusively online, Ray Ban now offers an incredible customisation service which allows you to take one of their classic styles and create your very own unique version. You can choose from 22 styles, 110 lenses and 310 colours and complete your design with a choice of initials or a personalised message engraved on the temple tips and the trademark Ray Ban case.  You can even add prescription lenses.

So there you have it. Three legendary icons of cool and the opportunity to create your very own signature Ray Ban style. What are you waiting for?
