The sweet side of Swedish Hill in Austin, Texas

*written by Austin Correspondent Erika Larson

A longtime staple in Austin’s cozy Clarksville neighborhood, Swedish Hill (née Sweetish Hill) has returned under McGuire Moorman Hospitality (MMH) ownership with an extensive all-day menu and European-influenced market. With feet on the ground for just 5 months, MMH has already proven to be the powerhouse in Austin’s restaurant scene. They’ve worked their magic here once again, updating this treasured Clarksville bakery and taking inspiration from Los Angeles’s Gjusta and New York’s famous bagel spot, Russ & Daughters.

Swedish Hill has expanded its menu focus from just homemade bakery items to a large selection of prepared salads, deli items, rotisserie chicken, lavish cheese & charcuterie boards, customizable sandwiches, and even caviar. Friday nights feature a new three-course market dinner each week with dishes like Whole Roasted Branzino and Warm Mushroom Focaccia Toast. For dessert, they have a selection of homemade gelato and delectable pastries to choose from.

Their beverage selection is extensive as well, with a handful of fresh juices, coffee from Coffee Manufactory, loose leaf teas, and an extensive beer and wine list, some of which are available for retail purchase in their market. My personal favorite is MMH’s own June’s Rosé, a delicious, light, sparkling wine that will turn even a non-sparkling-wine-drinker into a connoisseur!

Swedish Hill’s warm, café-like atmosphere is inviting, with a large outdoor seating area perfect for enjoying a leisurely cuppa, or a mimosa or two on one of our lovely Texas afternoons. The name itself is a nod to the original Sweetish Hill Bakery, first opened in 1975, and MMH has managed to keep a friendly, neighborhood vibe that will easily make this your go-to local spot.
