The Modern Gentleman’s Guide to Ethical Grooming

For the modern gentleman, good grooming is essential. Having a well-stocked bathroom of cosmetic products designed to help you look your very best is the new normal.

So what comes next? Like many people, I’m becoming more and more aware of the impact that my choices have on the wider world. If I can do something, anything, to improve the state of the planet, then I will. Companies like Lush who follow ethical buying practices, don’t test on animals and don’t use ingredients from suppliers that do are just one way we, as consumers, can do our bit.

Below are my go-to products that leave me looking good and feeling great.

Made with limes steeped in vodka, fresh grapefruit juice and lashings of salt, the version of the Ocean Salt face and body scrub I tried is self-preserving, meaning it’s made with only natural preservatives. It’s also vegan thanks to the silken tofu and Japan wax that binds it together. With a scent reminiscent of your summer holiday, my skin was left feeling smooth and softened with a healthy glow. Kalamazoo beard and face wash made with fresh pineapple, apricot kernel oil and cupuacu butter softens beards and skin. For those of you in the know, a beard can become itchy if neglected. Wash daily with this and that’s a thing of the past.

Even if you have a beard, you should be keeping your neck clean shaven. It instantly smartens your appearance and shows that your facial hair is intentional and not the result of personal neglect. Prince is a sophisticated triple orange blossom shaving cream that makes shaving a pleasant experience. It doesn’t foam and makes for a smooth, clean shave. Even better, I haven’t suffered from razor burn once.

An aftershave moisturiser is perfect to use after shaving. It glides on like a dream and absorbs into your skin quickly, with no greasy residue. Lavender, wheatgrass and aloe calm and hydrate sensitive skin giving you a healthy glow.

Even the best daily skincare regime in the world requires a boost every now and then. Mask of Magnaminty face and body mask, made with bentonite gel, talc, kaolin and glycerine, glides on like a dream. Peppermint oil stimulates blood cells under the surface of your skin, leaving your skin looking bright and refreshed.

We’ve all heard that beer and lemon juice are great for our hair and Cynthia Silvia Stout shampoo has plenty of both. One wash with this left my hair feeling hydrated with a glossy sheen. I have very thick but fine hair and this shampoo keeps my flyaways in check. Follow with American Cream conditioner. Made with moisturising honey water, refreshing fresh strawberries and fresh organic orange for shine, this conditioner is the bomb. It left my hair feeling silky and hydrated. I first used it about an hour before I went to bed and drifted off smelling like a strawberry milkshake. Talk about sweet dreams.

So there you have it, my guide to the best ethical grooming products Lush has to offer. Why not give them a try yourself and let us know how you get on?
