Support Montreal’s Black Theatre Workshop in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge

This year the Black Theatre Workshop will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, and to mark this milestone the company will be  participating in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge, a National public contest for the benefit of registered Canadian charities.

Based in Montreal, the Black Theatre Workshop is Canada’s longest running black theatre company.  Their “mission is to encourage and promote the development of a Black and Canadian Theatre, rooted in a literature that reflects the creative will of Black Canadian writers and artists, and the creative collaborations between Black and other artists. Black Theatre Workshop aims to promote and produce Black theatre that educates, entertains and delights its audiences. The company strives to create a greater cross-cultural understanding by its presence and the intrinsic value of its work.”

 

The pride of the Black Theatre Workshop is its trailblazing Artist Mentorship Program.  Every year a group of artists is selected to work with experienced mentors and attend intensive workshops led by some of theatreʼs most exceptional professional artists in the community, as well as members of Black Theatre Workshop.  Artists are exposed to potential apprenticeship and other work opportunities through the program, and at the end of the session, candidates participate in an Industry Showcase to show off everything they’ve learned. With COVID-19 unfortunately impacting all live performances, this season the Black Theatre Workshop went virtual, showcasing the hard work of this year’s AMP through Facebook Live earlier this week.

Taking place throughout the entire month of June, the Canada Helps Great Canadian Giving Contest encourages Canadians to donate to their charity of choice, and in turn they will count every donation as an entry into the contest.  The winning charity will receive a $20,000 donation as its prize.  Every dollar donated to the Black Theatre Workshop will count as an entry to this contest, and will help create more opportunities for black artists across Canada.
