Creating a Summer Wardrobe on a Budget

Building a new summer wardrobe can be depressing, especially if you are on a budget. However, knowing how and what to shop can save you loads of money and ensure you end up with an enviable summer wardrobe. Moreover, if you are also great at trimming and hemming, you may have an advantage.

Here are six easy shopping tips that will ensure you slay your summer wear without getting outside your modest budget.

Be Intentional With What You Want

Most budget shoppers end up buying things that they don’t really like because the items they want are too pricey. Resist buying the cheap stuff unless you want to fill your closet with things that you don’t need.

When shopping, don’t compromise on quality. Rather than buy three not-so-good tops, use the money to buy that one top that you love. Before heading out to shop, look at the colours of your wardrobe and confirm that the item you intend to buy matches other clothes you have. You don’t want to be stuck with an item that you can’t wear because there is nothing that goes with it.

Stick With the Classics

If you are at a loss on what to buy, stick with classic items. You can wear the classics in any season and at any time. This clothing also never goes out of fashion.

Think in the lines of dark skinny jeans or a beautiful black dress. Even if the clothes may be a bit pricey, they can last many summer months.

Sell What You Don’t Need

It is said that women only wear 20% of what is in their closet. Can you imagine that you can do without 80% of the items in your wardrobe?

For instance, you may have:

  • Too many tennis shoes
  • Too many red tops
  • A ton of $10 t-shirts that you never wear
  • Great items that no longer fit

Take time and fit everything in your wardrobe. If an item doesn’t fit, hasn’t been worn for a long time, or you don’t like it, get rid of it.

Rather than donate everything, consider selling the items some extra bucks. For example, you can auction them on eBay, sell them to your friends, post on local Facebook sales groups to get buyers or drop them at a consignment shop.

Stand out with Accessories

Accessories can make your boring summer outfit stand out. When it comes to accessories, spend smart rather than big. A few quality accessories will last longer and can be worn with multiple outfits. For example, a basket bag, the perfect sunglasses that suit your face, a unique watch, a summer hat or some lightweight sandals are cool for summer outfits.

Be a Savvy Shopper

You can shop great items even when on a budget. The secret is to know where to look.

Beware of impulse buying and start by shopping at a thrift store near you. These stores sell gently used clothes for less, and most of them have discounts or weekly specials. Moreover, you can shop for summer clothes out of season. Once the fall clothes start hitting the shelves in July, you can save a ton if you buy summer items on clearance sale.

Keeping up with fashion will require you to buy trendy clothes that are expensive but with a short shelf life. You can save by sticking to simple items that are always in style.

Repurpose or Make a Trade

If you can sew or are good with a pair of scissors, you can turn some clothes you no longer need into trendy wear. For instance, you can cut the legs of your ripped jeans and make a short. Old shirts can be repurposed into skirts or tank tops. You can also replace those basic plastic buttons on your shirt for something more luxurious like bone or mother of pearl buttons. These are available online at a small cost.

You can swap or trade some of the items in your closet with your friends and family members. Maybe you have a cool pair of ripped jeans that don’t fit you anymore. Swap them for a cute pair of boots from your friend. In the end, you will have some new clothes, some more cash, and a more organized closet.

Your summer wardrobe may be uninspiring, and you may be wondering if you can do anything about it with little cash. The answer is, “Absolutely yes!” However, you don’t have to break the bank to look good this summer. Follow the six tips above to reinvent your summer wardrobe.
