Here at ADDICTED there are two things we love; the arts and supporting a great cause. When you put the two together, what could be better? Enter Sistema Toronto.
When learned about this amazing program to help underprivileged youth have access to the arts – more specifically music – we fell in love with the whole idea, not to mention their amazing team, and thus have made sure to stay up to date with their efforts.
With that, Sistema Toronto will be hosting the Sistema Spirit Gala, the organisation’s annual party and fundraiser on Sunday, April 7 at The Spoke Club in downtown Toronto. Proceeds from the event will help bring more students into Sistema Toronto’s free after-school music education and social development program for at-risk children.
Guests of the Sistema Spirit Gala can expect a fun evening of live music from jazz saxophonist Neil Brathwaite and Sudanese-Canadian singer-songwriter Ruth Mathiang. They will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, sponsored beverages from Hogtown Brewery, Georgian Bay Spirit Co., and Clarity Wine. Fay and Fluffy of the popular Drag Queen Storytime program in Toronto will host the evening.
The event is a celebration of the Sistema Toronto community, which is still recovering from the cancellation of a $500,000 government grant in the fall of 2018. To foster inclusion and focus on building community, the event will be semi-casual, feature artists from Parkdale and Sistema. Toronto families for whom cost is a barrier to participation are invited to attend with donated tickets. Christie Gray, Executive Director, Sistema Toronto said:
“The Sistema Toronto team sees amazing progress in our students each day. We see shy children developing confidence and advocating for themselves, behavioural breakthroughs, personal bests, and kids falling in love with playing music. Our work relies on donor support, so we hope the community will join us for the Sistema Spirit Gala. Together, we’ll celebrate our students’ success, enjoy live music, and show our support vulnerable communities.”
