This past weekend I had the honour of joining in with some of Toronto greatest food lovers, creators and Connoisseur’s to enjoy an evening in support of Second Harvest known as Toronto Taste.
For those of you that don’t know, Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue charity and expert in perishable food recovery, with a dual mission of environmental protection and hunger relief. They recover nutritious, unsold food before it becomes waste and distributes it to a broad network of over 350 social service organizations.
Their free service helps nourish people through school programs, seniors’ centres, shelters, food banks, and regional food hubs. In now almost 35 years, Second Harvest has rescued over 140 million pounds of healthy food, preventing 128 million pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
So where does Toronto Taste come in?
Set at Evergreen Brickworks, Taste Toronto is the yearly fundraiser for Second Harvest and offers event goers access to 50 of Toronto’s premier restaurants and chefs who prepare their fantastic creations before your eyes.
Patrons tasted fine wines, spirits and craft beers while indulging in live and silent auctions, watch great chefs prepare some amazing dishes, and enjoyed food from savoury all the way to sweet.
Whether you wanted bao, or prosciutto on a bun, pasta to pork bun, fried chicken to fancy sushi there was a bit of everything, and I mean everything.
Not only that there were non-alcoholic drinks galore, desserts, coffees, and really anything your stomach your desire, on top of that we saw cooking competitions, demos, chatted with vendors, saw some fun circus acts and the list goes on.
It might say taste, but what they should really say is gorge, and that we did, well at the very least we tried our very best, but either way, we had a wonderful evening full of out of this world food, amazing drinks and extraordinary company.
If you didn’t make it out this year, make sure you make it out next year as it will be their 35-year anniversary and it’s sure to be the biggest and best one yet.
