When you’ve made up your mind to take a trip to Australia, you’re probably thinking about all the amazing cities, beaches and open country you’re about to see. If you’re planning on creating a schedule to get you between cities and country, then one place you’re not going to want to miss is Perth.
This city often finds itself in third place behind Melbourne and Sidney but Perth, in Western Australia, really is a place that has everything you could want, from vineyards to beaches, food culture to fascinating historical artefacts. If you miss out on Perth, you’ll be missing out on somewhere pretty special.
Public transport in the city is pretty good but you should certainly think about a hire car if you’re thinking of heading to the Swan Valley area and feel like taking a tour around the vineyards. Here you’ll also find honey makers and other organic growers to visit and buy from. To get the best deal Compare Car Rentals and hire one for a couple of days as you go outside the central areas.

Places to go
Perth has stunning beaches and most of them are geared up to be family-friendly, with flags in place to show you the best area to swim. The white beaches tend to attract a lot of sun-worshippers so head down relatively early to secure a spot. You’ll find plenty of beachside restaurants, cafes and bars to keep you satisfied throughout the day and long into the evening.
In the city itself, make sure to visit Fremantle Prison. A World Heritage-listed site that tells the story of the founding of Perth through the colonists and the convicts and of course the Aboriginal people.
This prison housed mainly white convicts on the late 1880s, who had been sent over from Britain. The prison was, at one time, the only place where executions could take place and there were several during its formative years.
On the brighter side, you’ll want to pay a visit to Fremantle Harbour. One of the country’s busiest cargo ports, it also has plenty of bars and restaurants and there’s not much that beats watching the sun setting over the harbour while sipping on a delicious cocktail.
This cosmopolitan city is also great for food, as you might expect. The fresh seafood is amazing but there are many influences from Asian cultures and so much in the way of choice from street food style restaurants to high-end offerings. There are also plenty of food festivals, so get your timing right and you’ll be eating your way around the city.
This vibrant, diverse city has everything you need to make a long weekend or longer, a stay to remember. With food to die for, beaches that are simply heavenly and a buzz about the place, you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away from Perth and onto your next destination. You’ll fall for Perth for good reason.
