Post-Breakup Makeovers- Reclaim Your Living Space

Breakups are tough, but they are part of our lives and we must learn to deal with them. If your relationship included living together, you ought to take some steps to reclaim your home after a breakup. Every relationship leaves behind reminders and results of some mutual decisions. In order to be able to move on with our lives, without constantly being reminded of the past, we need to make some decisions. Surely, we can start with our home. There are some things we can do to make our home feel like ours again.

Put away all the reminders

Certainly, all the relationships leave behind some reminders. It can be some piece of furniture that you chose together, a photo of you two on the wall, throw pillows, vases – basically, anything that involved the two of you. All of this can evoke some painful memories, which can make us feel depressed and sad. So, what you need to do first is to get rid of all the things that remind you of your relationship. You can give them back to your ex if you wish, you can store them in a box or perhaps you can donate them. Once you are free of the things that elicit negative feelings, you are on the road to recovery. The old proverb ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ really proves a point here. Now you have the chance to give the place your personal touch.

Give your place a deserved makeover

Now that you have disposed of all the distressing objects, it is time to give your place a total makeover. One of the ways to makeover your space after a breakup is to paint it. Paint all the rooms in the colours you always wanted. You can find small comfort in the fact that now when you are living on your own again, you do not have to make any compromises concerning the colours used, the preferred style of a certain room or the type of suitable art. Besides giving the place new colours, rearranging the furniture can really freshen up your home. You can spruce up the furniture in your home and get the pieces you prefer and that reflect your style. Depending on your budget, you could also buy brand new kitchenware. Anything new you decide on will make you feel like you are starting from a clean slate.

Redecorate

After considering some major time-consuming things you can change, we come to the less time-consuming and more fun ones. There are so many ways to redecorate your space. By choosing wall decorations and art, you have the chance to show your taste. Since you are looking for something to change completely the vibe your place aspires, a good way to do that is by adding some effective details such as canvas wall art, mirrors or clocks on your walls. Even though these things seem like unimportant little details, they actually make your home feel like home. And when you make it personal, it finally feels like YOUR home, where YOU feel relaxed and comfortable. Since your home is the place you spend most time in (besides your workplace) you need to do everything that will help you feel like it is your own space.

Revamp your bedroom

The bedroom is definitely a room in your home that needs to be considered separately. It is the place where you shared the most intimate moments with your partner. Clearly, it can evoke a lot of feelings. In order to neutralize it, we must take a few steps. First things first, if you can afford it, you should definitely change your bed. And if not, new sheets and bedding will do the job. Also, buy some new throw pillows and blankets. If necessary, make some new arrangements and the room will instantly feel fresh and ready for a new start. Make sure to get rid of all the reminders of your ex.

Bring your place to life

Among the little things, you can do to reclaim your home is definitely to bring new life to it by introducing some fresh plants and flowers to your home. Fresh flowers in your home make it ’green’, cleansing the air and providing you with a connection to nature. You can try new flowers in different colours and scents every week. If you are a spiritual person, cleansing your place with sage to get rid of the past energy might do the trick for you. Also, an array of herbs in the kitchen will not only provide an interesting scent in your kitchen but will also be very practical and useful for cooking.

After a relationship, some time needs to pass before we heal completely. But the healing process won’t start if we are constantly reminded of the past relationship. So, the first step to healing is to get rid of the negative reminders and to move on with our lives in a ‘new’ home.
