OH, SO YOU LIKE CLICKBAIT? I apologize, I realize now that I may have confused ‘not able to get any vaccine’ with ‘a meme some trollbot made told me vaccines are bad and I believe it’

Quite the opposite, we love vaccines here in the ADDICTED Music Dept. We’ll take a syringe full of Fresca if you tell us it’ll keep the ‘VID away. The cheeky headline was a lament to the poor vaccine rollout we’re seeing from our provincial leader here in Ontario.

Not to go too deep down the conspiracy rabbit hole, but it doesn’t seem postal codes containing music venues are high on the list for vaccine doses, so we’re pushing our live music coverage back to October.

Not to get you down and leave you there, here are 4 uplifting artists for this grey Friday.

First up is a Juno Award-winning, Two-Spirit, Transgender, Francophone, Anishinaabe/Métis artist, G.R. Gritt. They are performing a live stream tonight via the NAC. West London-born Shakka has had a string of mainstream hits including the platinum-selling single “Man Down” featuring AlunaGeorge. He’s collaborated with the likes of Young Thug, Tinie Tempah, Sigma and more. The British R&B vocalist, producer and hitmaking songwriter’s new single Solo is out today and it features the skills of Washington, DC rapper Goldlink.

Many first heard Nigerian-born and North Carolina-raised artist Uwade on Fleet Foxes’ 2020 album Shore. Today, she released her new digital 7-inch The Man Who Sees Tomorrow. It’s her second-ever original song, and an ode to her father, who passed in August 2020. Following his passing, Uwade found herself diving deeper into her Nigerian heritage. As a result, the single’s B-Side is a cover of Edo singer Sir Victor Uwaifo’s Lodarore, a song that Uwade’s father loved and would sing to her on her way to school. Both of these new songs are dedicated to him.

I’m a couple of weeks late on this last addition but it must be included. One of my favourite Toronto bands, Beams put their latest album, Ego Death out on March 26. I’ve been listening to it all week and damn, it’s so good. They celebrated the album’s release with another – a concert film, shot in empty Toronto venues. I’m so happy for them and I hope you’ll get to know this amazing band.
