New Music Addiction: Kaneholler

If you’re looking for some new music to brighten up this cold, long winter, let me introduce you to Kaneholler. This synth jazz duo’s music has become my latest earworm and of course, my new music addiction.

Talent can be genetic, and that’s definitely the case with Chelsea Tyler. Daughter of the legendary Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith fame), Tyler has got some serious pipes of her own, and she’s putting them to great use with Kaneholler. Tyler, an aspiring model, met now creative parter Jon Foster, an aspiring actor, through another 2nd generation musician/celebrity/beauty, none other than Zoe Kravitz. That Brooklyn meeting led to the pair bonding over their mutual passion for jazz, soul, and electronic music. Once their creative partnership was solidified they moved to Los Angeles and set up a home studio to make music under the name Badbad. Upon discovering that their chosen name was already spoken for, they dug into their roots to find an alternate moniker. KANEHOLLER (from Kane, Gaelic for battle, and holler, meaning to cry out) is the name of a bamboo forest on Chelsea’s grandfather’s land in the south. With a name that literally means battle cry, it’s no wonder this pair has so confidently marched onto the music scene.

Kaneholler recently completed their first official releases with the February 13th release of Vol. 3, the third installment in their three EP series simply titled Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3. The EPs were all written, recorded, and produced from their home studio in Venice Beach. I’m a huge fan of eclectic music, and that’s exactly how I would describe Kaneholler. Tyler’s voice harkens back to the bluesy songstresses of old, sultry, silky and oh so sweet. Jazz piano, modern beats and trippy electronic samples swirl together in a heady mix that sooths and excites at the same time. Check out thithe video for “Someone New” and you’ll see what I mean.

Like what you hear? Then check out Kaneholler when they pass through your city this Spring. Their live show is an experience, and while I won’t get it (come to Toronto guys!), I’d love for you to tell me how you liked them on twitter at @weraddicted. Enjoy!
