The province of Quebec has an incredibly rich music scene, with incredibly diverse artists and bands coming from many different cities. It’s music that we sometimes never get a chance to discover in the rest of Canada, which is a tragedy to me. That’s why I love discovering new and cool acts from different places in Quebec, and sharing them with you my amazing addicts. And for today, that new discovery is a band called Sandveiss.
Hailing from Quebec City, Sandveiss has been making music since 2011. In 2012 the band, lead by singer François Couture, released a 4 song EP, a demo that was their introduction to the world. The following year Couture decided to leave the band and guitarist Luc Bourgeois stepped up to take the place of singer and frontman. Along with Dzemal Trtak (drums) Daniel Girard (bass) and newest addition Shawn Rice (guitar), the recording of what would become the band’s debut album began. That piece of musical gold Scream Queen is what turned me onto Sandveiss, because, frankly, it’s fucking awesome.
Scream Queen is a journey into intensely heavy yet incredibly melodic rock music. I’ve been calling them the Monster Truck of Quebec, for their ability to blend decade spanning influences (including Black Sabbath, Mountain, Kyss, and Nirvana to name a few) with a modern independant quality all their own. Singing in english, and playing music that will have any rock or metal fan moshing and headbanging, it’s a complete shock to me that these guys haven’t yet transitioned into the rest of the Canadian music market, but hopefully appearances at festivals this summer, and their impassioned live performances will start this much needed conversion process. These blokes have been touring tirelessly since the beginning of the year, and will be making an appearance TODAY at Heavy Montreal at 2:45pm on the Forest Stage. With music lovers from accross the country and other parts of the world in attendance, world will definitely travel about these guys, because really how can it not?
I had the the chance to sit down with Sandveiss while I was at Festival D’ete de Quebec, and they were just the sweetest humans. Check out my interview with them below and get addicted to Sandveiss.
