Musical Second Chances – an interview with Trevor Guthrie

“I’m kinda faded but I feel alright”; any Canadian with access to a radio in the early 2000s would be (and SHOULD be) familiar with the song “Faded”, the #1 hit single by soulDecision, and the voice of lead singer Trevor Guthrie. Fastforward to today, and more than just radio listening Canadians are now familiar with Guthrie’s voice. In 2013, nearly a decade after soulDecision called it quits, Guthrie’s soulful lyrics and vocals joined with the masterful beats of legendary DJ and producer Armin Van Buuren. The result? This club anthem:

The song “This is what it feels like” earned Guthrie his first Grammy nomination and catapulted him back up the radio charts. Now, Guthrie is in near constant collaboration mode, trading his guitar and former boy band image for a seat at the table with some of the world’s most well known DJs. A year after “This is what it feels like”, Guthrie released “Soundwave”, landing him another radio and club hit. It would seem that these days, Guthrie’s skill lies in crafting poignant, heartfelt and incredibly emotional lyrics that somehow align perfectly with almost lighthearted and danceworthy music. This couldn’t be more true about his latest song “Wanted”, a beautiful song about watching a loved one struggle with addiction. Take a listen below:
