Meet your new favorite band: Thunderpussy

There is no irony to the title of this review.  Thunderpussy is my new favorite band, and they should be yours too.

I’ll admit, like a linguistic magpie I was drawn to the band’s eye popping moniker.  I mean, Thunderpussy – it’s a name that deserves a double take.  But the name is just the beginning; everything about Thunderpussy is meant to draw you in, from their sparkly, studded biker meets figure skater wardrobe, their balls to the wall rock and roll and larger than life stage charisma.  But its their passion, the playful joy they radiate in their craft and their positive no fucks given attitude that will hold onto you for life.

Hailing from Seattle, Washington, the birthplace of my first favorite band, Thunderpussy is a fierce, femme filled rock and roll quartet that have revived my joy for music.  I would describe them but frankly their Facebook bio also brings me joy, and truly says it better than I ever could:

“If Thor’s Hammer of the Gods from “Immigrant Song” landed in the hands of four wise, willful, and wild women? Well, it would sound something like Thunderpussy. The quartet—Molly Sides [vocals], Whitney Petty [guitar], Leah Julius [bass], and Ruby Dunphy [drums]—do the most rock ‘n’ roll thing possible and quite literally fuck up every rock ‘n’ roll stereotype you know to be true, piercing the halls of Valhalla in the process.

If you don’t trust my taste, well frankly I’m a little hurt but Pearl Jam‘s Mike McCready agrees with me, so much so that he lent his well worn and well documented guitar skills to Thunderpussy’s latest single “Never know”.

I got the chance to check out Thunderpussy at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto last week, and I was blown away.  It’s not often that I’ll leave the house anymore to cover a show, I’m too old and crotchety for that, but this was well worth peeling myself off the couch on a holiday Monday.  I danced, I sang, I smiled until my face was fit to split, all because Thunderpussy put on the best live music performance I had seen in months.  I keep using the word joy in this article but it’s because it’s the perfect word to associate with this band.  My photos could never to them justice, so you’ve really just got to make the effort to see them live.  If I can do it so can you!

Thunderpussy will be finishing up their most recent tour over the coming weeks, check them out when they come to your town.
