While I’ve always tried my best to be a gentlemen, I must admit, I’ve also always been a rule breaker, so when I heard about Maestro Dobel Tequila and how they too were breaking all the rules and carving out their own path I had to find out more. I sat down with their brand ambassador, Jonny Gray, to talk about how their tequila is made, learn about all the flavors, why it was clear, and of course, how Maestro Doble was breaking all the rules.
What is Tequila?
Tequila is a regional specific name for a distilled liquor made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, Mexico. In fact Mexican laws state that tequila can only be produced in the state of Jalisco and limited areas in the states of Michoacán, Guanajuato,Tamaulipas and Nayarit.
How is it made?
As we know, the agave plant is grown until ripe, which still to this day done by hand in a lot of areas, as the farmers, many of whom have been doing this for generations, must check each plant to make sure that it is just right because if it is not the plant won’t have the right carbohydrates for fermentation.
Once picked, the agave centres or “Pina” are removed and cooked down, the agave juice is then extracted and is poured into wooden or steel barrels to ferment over the course of several days.
The now fermented, not quite yet tequila, known as “mosto” is double distilled and poured into the highest quality oak barrels which is typically done to add more character, flavor and depth to this popular spirit.
Maestro Dobel is a blend of Extra-Añejo, Añejo and Reposado Tequila, and is double filtered to produce a crystal clear liquid renowned for its character and smoothness.
We’ve talked about what tequila is, how it’s made, now lets get to the good part.
Most of the time when drinking tequila, because of it’s harsher taste, we hear in North America and lots of places around the world incorporate salt and lemon, and shoot it back, BUT, and this is a huge BUT, if the tequila you are drinking is good, it should be sipped, neat or on the rocks, that’s how you know you have a good tequila.
I am putting my stamp on this one, Maestro Dobel is the best tequila I have every enjoyed in my life, bar none.
At first look the tequila is crystal clear, at first smell the tequila is mellow, unassuming and understated. As it touches your lips and glides over your palette the agave comes through, followed by an almost buttery taste, with notes of sweetness and a faint hint of vanilla.
The aftertaste leave some spice, but no kick or burn, just a want for more, and the incredable part was that each time we tasted more, I could taste different notes and flavors, it really was an experience.
So by thinking outside the box, Maestro Dobel Tequila has broken all the rules, and really don’t we all love a rebel? I know I do 😉
