How to Blow-Dry Your Hair Into Perfect Beach Waves Like a Pro

The first signs of fall might be are here, but if you’re anything like me then you don’t let some colourful leaves put a damper on your spirit. You could say my hair and makeup is eternal summer, and even in the winter I prefer to look like I just walked off the beach. Maybe I lived in Australia in another life, but mermaid tresses are a trademark.

If you’re on the same page, or otherwise already planning your winter getaway, here’s how to blow-dry your hair into perfect beach waves like a pro, because let’s be real, “winter snow waves” is not a thing and if it were it would probably just be called unshowered toque hair and nobody really wants that.

First things first, in order to get those envious hair stylist messy curls, you’re going to need the right tools. I used my Conair Boutique Intelligent Sensor Dryer ($69.99), Conair Titanium Wave Wand ($59.99), a medium barrel round brush, OGX Silk Blowout Spray, and OGX Coconut Curls Finishing Mist.

Step 1: Rough Dry Hair

Began by spraying your hair in a even layer of OGX Silk Blowout Spray. This stuff is amazing for protecting your hair and also reducing pesky flyaways; we’re aiming for beach Goddess, not Castaway. Rough dry your hair to about 80% dry.

Step 2: Blowout With Round Brush

Next grab your round brush! This is perhaps the most important step because it’s going to give you killer volume. Use the round brush to dry sections up and away from the face, really curling them at the bottom (see an awesome blowout tutorial here). While any blow dryer will do, I find the Conair Intelligent Sensor perfect for the task as it has sensors that detect when you put the dryer down and like magic it pauses the air flow. This saves you having to turn the blow dryer on and off when you’re blowing out sections with the round brush, which otherwise can be annoying AF.

Step 3: Curl 1 Inch Sections

Once your hair is completely dry, and perfectly voluptuous like a Kardashian’s behind, you can get to styling. Since my hair is SO thick, a pro tip is to curl the bottom sections with a straightener so you can get through the bulk faster, and then finesse the top layers with a tool like the Conair Titanium Wave Wand. Wrap 1 inch sections around the wand, away from your face, while holding it a downward angle. Spray with OGX Coconut Curls Finishing Mist once you’re done, and the you’ll really smell like you were just in the tropics.
