Guardians of the Galaxy

When the opening shot was of a Walkman with a mix tape titled Awesome Mix Vol. 1, I knew I’d just love it! Guardians of the Galaxy is serves up exactly what one craves from sci-fi summer blockbusters. Smart, funny, and even cute, Guardians of the Galaxy has done the Marvel movie franchise proud. Well done director James Gunn!

My current celeb crush Chris Pratt plays Quill, a Hans Solo-like reluctant hero (with a few more dance moves). After stealing an orb in hopes of a big payout, Quill finds he stole much more than he bargained for. With the bandits he double crossed, a green-skinned yet still stunning alieness named Gamora (Zoe Saldana – and to be honest, I always thought she kinda looked like an alien, so this casting was Spock on!), and a big blue baddie hot on his heels, fate plays its cards with an unlikely pair – Rocket, a rewired robot raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Groot, a tall tree-like creature of few words (Vin Diesel).

A motley crew is formed, mistrust and desire to kill each other eventually morphs into friendship. But before the warm-heartedly revelation, much action, adventure, satire, and laughs occur. It’s everything you want from a superhero movie – action, comedy, story, cheesy lines, monsters, aliens, Benecio del Toro – plus the addition of a fun soundtrack!

A warning, though, what audiences have come to look forward to, mid or post credits was disappointingly missing. Those little comedic bits and hints from future superhero films are awesome! So after waiting with the majority of the theatre through the entire credit sequences, there was an audible grumble of disappointment when the screen went blank with no little teaser. So while the mumblings when leaving were unhappy, when you reflected on the film itself, it put a smile back on my face.
