This week I’m going to be heading to one of my favorite Canadian cities for a serious dose of amazing live music courtesy of the Festival International de Jazz Montreal. Since I’m hoping that a few of you lovely readers will be there too, I figured I would give you guys some background as well as my musical picks for the fest!
Now in its 37th year, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (founded by Alain Simard and Andre Menard and presented this year by TD in collaboration with Rio Tinto Alcan) will be taking place from June 29th – July 9th. The founders were recently inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame this past spring, cementing nearly 4 decades of live music success. Simard and Menard began the festival in 1980, but it was in 1986 during the 7th edition, when introducing free outdoor performances revolutionized the festival. Now recognized as the largest jazz festival in the world, FJM will present over 600 free concerts on nine outdoor stages featuring over 3,000 artists from around the world, attracting over 2 million attendees during the 10-day musical celebration. Artists spanning all genres will grace the festival’s stages, from Royal Wood and Francesco Yates to Danny Brown and Lauren Hill, with the full lineup featuring all sorts of acts from the up and coming to the world famous.
The legendary Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will be one of the most anticipated acts taking the stage, as the band will be celebrating their return to the stage after Jones’ battle with cancer in 2013 and her remission in late 2015. The critically acclaimed documentary Miss Sharon Jones!, a film chronicling her through the fight for her life, from two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple, will open theatrically starting July 29, 2016, following their performance at the festival.
