Just like fashion, food trends too. Recently there’s been the rise of poutine, cupcakes, bacon, and doughnuts. Could gourmet hot dogs be the next big food fad? More and more joints are opening up and taking the traditional wiener to the next level. All the way to eleven in cases like Fancy Franks.
Growing up we all love hot dogs, then they’re no longer a treat, they’re just street meat (usually consumed around 3 am in an inebriated state and lead to waking up with a stomach full of regret). But now with gourmet glorified sausages and haute dog places popping up, we’re able to re-embrace the dog.
Franks goes beyond the bun with efforts to be an active and engaged member of their community. From sourcing ingredients and produce from local vendors and arranging fundraisers for neighbouring schools, Franks clearly has a conscience. The community involvement keeps on keeping on and on National Hot Dog Day (yes, there’s a national everything day); on July 23, Fancy Franks will be trading dogs for donations in support of Sick Kids. Last year they gave away 3,000 dogs and raised $2,500. This year they’re looking to double that. So on Thursday, find a Fancy Franks and eat for a good cause.
Now let’s get down to the delicious. All dogs are all beef in lamb casings and are never frozen. We mowed down on three, followed that up with poutine, and downed doughnuts for dessert (needless to say we waddled, not walked, out the door).
Frankie Goes to Buffalo
This one was top in terms of tangy factor. A panko friend weiner added crunch to accompany the chicken bacon, carrots, celery, blue cheese dressing and buffalo wing sauce.
Franks Got Seoul
Lighter in punch but just as tasty. This dogs comes dressed with Korea beef ribs, kimchi, sesame seeds, and scallions.
Franco Y Huevos
We were lucky enough to try a dog so new it hasn’t been walked onto the menu yet. This breakfast between buns is made of eggs, red and green peppers, chorizo and paprika.
Another new item in time for #BigPigTO. Chorizo, grilled onion, seasoning, cheese curds, beef gravy, half a boiled egg, fresh cut fries, green onions.
Semi-Glazed Mini Doughnuts
Nothing seemed semi nor uber mini in this case, but zero complaints about that. Though I will note the danger in them – the danger of looking down and them being all gone. Poof.
Note: the top seller is Franks Coney Island: chili, chopped onions and mustard.
