Fashion Fix: mycoatisblue™ Founder Natasha Patten

We spoke to Creative Director and Founder Natasha Patten.  Natasha has a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Ryerson University and brings over 15 years of custom clothing experience and signature style of clean lines and sleek fit to mycoatisblue™. Fashion runs in her family: her late uncle was a tailor at New York City’s Lord & Taylor, her aunt was a talented seamstress, and her father bought her her first industrial sewing machine, which she still uses to this day.  Motivated to start her brand after successfully designing and making her own spring coat to fit her long sleeve length perfectly, Natasha began making custom pieces for a select clientele before officially launching her brand in 2016. She finds her design inspiration through her love of modern architecture, integrating shapes and angles to create her signature style.

 

 

What brought you to the fashion industry?

There are a few things that have led me to the fashion industry. When I was in grade 7, I made a pair of shorts in Home Ec class and got an A+. I realized that I had a talent for fashion, and that’s where it began. In High School, I had the opportunity to work with renowned Canadian designer Izzy Camilleri as a work-study placement which was pivotal for me because I was able to really see how a designer functioned in the industry. Lastly, I have an aunt who is an amazing seamstress and a late uncle who was a tailor in New York and Lord &Tailor. They both inspired me to pursue this as a career.

 

How would you describe your personal style?

Clean lines and simplicity define my style. I’ve tried to wear frills and be more whimsical back in the day, but that was never my taste. I’m drawn to simple lines, interesting angles and of course I love to wear black – which I know is so cliche!

 

How would you describe your line/brand?

mycoatisblue™ is an elevated collection of Canadian made, sophisticated outerwear inspired by the lines and curves of architecture. The styles are intentionally created to suit a variety of body types and sizes with designs that are unlike other brands currently on the market.

 

What do you wish you could change about the fashion industry?

I wish change would come in the form of more Black voices in leading positions at large multinational brands. We need to see a variety of design perspectives by giving talented designers who don’t get these opportunities a stage. I don’t mean celebrities or athletes, but actual design creatives.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? 

I would likely be an architect if I weren’t doing fashion. I’m also a makeup artist and worked many years in the television industry and then got into beauty education. All of these industries interconnect in one way or another.
