Fashion Fix: meet Studio Lorem Ipsum founder Jessica Lee

Recently Toronto hosted its 10th annual shopping even INLAND.  With a focus on shopping local and supporting emerging Canadian talent in the fashion industry, INLAND showcases some of the best and brightest brands in Canadian fashion. I had the pleasure of spending some time at Inland last weekend where I spent too much money on too many beautiful new things.  Spending feels better when you know it’s supporting local talent, so I’m going to highlight one last incredible INLAND designer.  Let’s chat about Lorem Ipsum.

Lorem Ipsum is a women’s outerwear brand founded by Vancouver resident Jessica Lee.  Jessica was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to Vancouver, Canada as a teenager.  After earning a degree in Economics and Theatre Design from the University of British Columbia, Jessica made the decision to pursue her dream career in the fashion industry. She pursued her Fashion Design diploma at the Blanche Macdonald Centre Vancouver, before journeying to the UK to study at the Istituto Marangoni in London, where she earned her Masters in Fashion Design, with a focus on Womenswear.  After graduation, Jessica worked in the British fashion industry before returning home to Vancouver to launch Lorem Ipsum.   Coats have always been Jessica’s favorite fashion item, and living in Canada she learned that the struggle was real when it came to finding a great quality coat at a reasonable price.  So she simply started designing her dream coats herself with Lorem Ipsum.

Studio Lorem Ipsum is now making its mark as a minimal contemporary chic womenswear brand specializing in premium quality outerwear.  The brand name, Lorem Ipsum, embraces the meaning of having no meaning; “We are nothing, so we can be anything”.  The brand’s mission is to create incredible clothing without a thought to the boundaries of possibility.  Their goal is to create timeless and chic contemporary designs with unique elements and make them with premium quality materials only in classic, stylish and comfortable fits that their clients crave.

I got the chance to chat with Jessica about fashion and what personal style means to her.

What brought you to the fashion industry?

It has always been my dream to become a fashion designer from when I was a kid. I was a kid who just loved playing with clothes and playing catwalk.

How would you describe your personal style?

Minimal, Classy, chic with some sophisticated twist in details. I try to stay sensitive with the current fashion trend, yet I try not to loose my own style and be focused on just trend. I always try to be selective with the current trends in what I choose to blend into my own style. I think it’s critical to fully understand what style puts yourself in a comfortable and confident position, so you can empower yourself through the fashion language you speak. \

How would you describe your line/brand?

My brand, Studio Lorem Ipsum, actually perfectly represents my own personal style that is minimal, classy, chic with some sophisticated twist in details. Studio Lorem Ipsum pursues minimal contemporary chic womenswear collection specializing in premium quality outerwear, such as wool cashmere handmade coats. We are founded on four pillars, sophisticated design, craftsmanship to create perfect fit and finishings, premium quality materials and elegance, and we aim to deliver functional and timeless products.

What do you wish you could change about the fashion industry?

Studio Lorem Ipsum supports slow fashion; if I could change anything about the fashion industry, I wish to get rid of this craze for fast fashion and turn it into support for slow fashion and smart consumption. I understand how the public is always thirsty for newness, but I think the phenomenon for fast fashion is too much, and it’s making the fashion industry one of the most polluting industries in the world. All the cheap fast fashion stuff gets dumped after one season, and they are creating massive chemically made garbage every day. Studio Lorem Ipsum believes that slow fashion is the initial key for reducing the massive garbage created by fashion industry, and is trying to create clothes that will last for lifetime.

What is the best piece of style advice you’ve ever received?

Technically, it’s not a piece of style advice given to me personally, but I always keep this quote in my mind as the best and the most beautiful style advice for my pursuit of minimalism:

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.   – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
