For my last trip of 2018, I was lucky enough to return to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (aka the west coast) and check out the brand new Riu Baja California, learn more about the area, and take in some of the sights with my pals from Sunwing.
As I hopped onto another Sunwing plane and made my way to my Sunwing Elite seat I was excited to return to Cabo (having been there in the spring) to see more of what this beautiful area this time with the help of the team from Sunwing Experiences.
For those of you wondering about why I always fly Sunwing Elite, there are two major reasons; the Sunwing Elite line, which allows me to breeze past lines of people, and the luxury of having a larger seat with way more leg room. It’s really the way to fly for all-inclusive.
As I stepped off the place and felt the warm air touch my skin, I took a deep breath and thought to myself, this is going to be a wonderful week.
Next, we were whisked away from the airport over to the hotel. Arriving at the brand new Riu Palace Baja California, our home for the week, we walked in and were greeted with welcome drinks. With the sun shining through into the stunning courtyard, I was ready to kick off a week of sand and sun.
This brand new property, that sits beside its sister property, the Riu Santa Fe (for all ages), is first and foremost for guests aged 19 and over. For that factor alone I was already a fan. It boasts sleek new rooms, many with stunning ocean views. It has 4 beautiful pools, great restaurants, and a gigantic breakfast buffet that looks out onto the water.
For those of you that have visited Cabo, and have been to the marina (just down the beach from the resort) it’s a true gem and the gateway to a whole oceanic world of adventure.
We had the pleasure to head out and see the coastline, whale watch, see dolphins, sea lions, and so much more. Even though it wasn’t yet the season for whale watching, we saw many in our tour over a sunny afternoon.
Back on land we made our way into the countryside and were lead to a Camel Sanctuary where we were able to learn about the camels, where they came from, how they were saved, and we got to know them a little better. We were even able to take a very brief ride on them, after which we rewarded them with some treats. It was fun and was followed by an authentic lunch and tequila tasting, which of course always perks me up.
From eco lunches to seeing historical towns like Todo Santos, to local art, candy, and of course meeting the locals along the way, Cabo and the surrounding area has so much more to offer than just warm weather and amazing beaches.
The restaurant culture is on the rise, the authentic industry like glass blowing and rug making are still strong and even more fun, you can have them guide you through the making of these wonderful Mexican products.
While we did get to see so much of the area and what it had to offer, we also had time to drop in at a foam party over at the Riu Santa Fe, along with the water slides for adults, and a separate one for kids, and we had some great food on both resorts.
The team at Riu were all super upbeat and wanted you to have fun. From the bellhop to the management, there was a great feeling of fun, enjoyment, and laughter that you don’t often see as a member of the media. If really did make me feel like part of a family for the week, and that says a lot.
Oh, and did I mention the sheer beauty that is a Cabo sunrise, in my visits over the years, I have seen some of the most stunning skies ever, and this time didn’t disappoint, once again I was in awe most of the mornings we were there.
The food, the area, the history and the resort, made for a really amazing trip, and unlike some of the past trips I have featured over 2018, Riu is actually on the more affordable side at a lower price per day, and really, I think it’s a steal of a deal.
So, if you’re looking to get away from the weather this winter and want to check out the west coast, I would highly recommend you check out the amazing trips and packages that Sunwing has to offer all winter long; and if you’re looking to really kick back and have fun, I’d suggest checking out a Riu if you have the chance.
Happy travels in 2019!
