When it comes to “dream jobs”, I’m just going to assume owning an ice cream company is right up there. So when I had the chance to chat with Benjamin Outmezguine, co-founder of CoolWay Ice Cream, I jumped at the chance.
For those of you not yet aware, Coolway is North-America’s first protein ice cream which also contains 50% less sugar than other ice creams. Not only that, it’s actually really tasty and for me personally, satisfies the cravings for ice cream, while being a great source of protein.
Now that you’re up to speed on Coolway (available at Metro, Longo, and IGA) we can chat with the man himself, co-founder Benjamin Outmezguine about ice cream, his journey, and what exactly makes his job a dream.
What was your first job ever?
My first real job was starting CoolWay, I dropped out of university with my two business partners and we gave it all our attention.
Did you go to school/get training for your dream job?
No, I jumped right into it. When it comes to learning I was always a hands-on kind of person and being an entrepreneur forces you to learn quickly and solve problems even faster.
How did it all begin (how did you start CoolWay)?
My CoolWay business partners and I were in university and realized that school just wasn’t for us. We wanted to start our own business, which would have a positive impact on people’s lives. While brainstorming for ideas around a kitchen table, while eating some ice cream, the idea of creating a high protein, low sugar ice cream that would let you indulge guilt-free struck us. Luckily we had Richard (Noah’s dad) who had over 30 years of experience making ice cream. He was able to create the very first batch of CoolWay ice cream (CoolWhey at the time).
What makes CoolWay stand out from the crowd?
Definitely our taste, there’s a lot of science behind the production of ice cream. It’s very difficult to perfect the texture, stability and sweetness of the product while removing most of the fat and the sugar. After constantly working on our recipes for four years, we became experts at creating fit frozen desserts. While conducting some blind taste-tests, most people aren’t able to tell the difference between our low cal ice cream and regular ice cream.
We take pride in the fact that we are the only Canadian company in the healthy ice cream category. We noticed that a lot of people genuinely want to support Canadian entrepreneurship and we do our best to reward them with the best tasting, healthy ice cream on the market.
If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?
Probably another business, in the health-food category.
What accomplishment/achievement are you most proud of?
Creating a product that people love. Anyone can start a business, but it’s challenging to launch a product that will be successful and that people will want. Our low-calorie ice cream is flying off the shelves and we’re loving it! Even though it has taken a lot of hard work to start CoolWay, getting emails from supporters who thank us for creating such a delicious guilt-free treat is what makes us keep going.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to find/create their dream job but hasn’t yet?
Starting your own business takes a lot of hard work but it’s infinitely more rewarding than working a 9-to-5 job. Creating a product that people love is an exceptional feeling and pushes you to continue and do even more. You’ve got to take the risk in life, as long as you have the right product and the drive to make it successful it will work.
