Celebrate summer in the city with some refreshing cocktails

If you live in Toronto like I do, you know that summer has been very slow to make its appearance in our city.  But now that we’ve had a few sunny, jacket optional days, I think it’s finally safe to say that summer has arrived!  It’s a cause for celebration, and I for one enjoy celebrating with cocktails.

Summertime cocktails can be made with lots of different spirits, but if you want to focus on bright, fresh flavors, be they fruit forward and sweet or bold and savory, it’s fun to start with vodka to let the essence of summer really shine through.  A vodka I enjoy for cocktails as well as on its own, with water or over ice, is Luksusowa.  Its clean, crisp taste makes it easy to sip on its own, and perfect to blend with other flavors in cocktails.  And for someone like me with an increasingly sensitive stomach, I like that Luksusowa is distilled from potatoes, making it gluten free and safe for those who suffer from gluten intolerance.

We got some expert advice on how to up our cocktail game this summer from expert mixologist James Millard from Toronto’s Mistura restaurant. Check out the recipes below!

Caeser Lux

Raise the bar on this classic Canadian cocktail with gourmet Caeser mix, a dash of truffle oil and Luksusowa Vodka.

Ingredients

2 oz LuksusowaVodka

6 oz Walter Craft Caesar Mix

6 drops white truffle oil

Garnish to your taste

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and mix using a rolling technique. Pour into a Collins glass rimmed with celery salt and garnish as desired. We recommend any of the following: Celery, a pickle spear, spicy pickled beans, pickled mushrooms, olives, a lemon wheel.  Or use your imagination!

Raspberry Sour

Now that summer is here, pick up some locally sourced raspberries and free-range eggs to make this fruity cocktail extra special.

Ingredients

2 oz LuksusowaVodka

1 oz lemon juice

¾ oz simple syrup

¾ oz egg white

6–8 fresh raspberries

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Dry shake first, followed by a second shake with ice. Single strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with two raspberries on a bamboo skewer.

Cocktail Style Coffee

Skip your afternoon latte and sip on this tasty concoction, sweetened Canadian style with Maple Syrup.

Ingredients

2 oz LuksusowaVodka

2 oz espresso

½ oz maple syrup

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and give it a strong shake with cubed ice. Single strain into a coupe or martini glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

*To get defined layers, the trick is to shake it really hard.
