Catching Up on DC’s Stargirl

Before streaming services, catching up on previously-aired shows was rather tricky. You had to wait for a broadcaster to air the episodes again or try to find a tape. Now, if you miss a show, all you have to do is find the right service and start watching. So that means that nowadays, you can easily catch up on your favourite tv, or discover something new like DC’s Stargirl series, which releases on the CW in summer 2021. That makes now the perfect time for us to catch up on season one, so we can cruise right into season two.

What Is Stargirl?

Stargirl is a series executive produced by Geoff Johns and written by Colleen McGuinness, James Dale Robinson, Melissa Carter, and Taylor Streitz.

Announced by DC in 2018 and released between May 18 and August 10, 2020, the show’s 13 episodes are all between 40 minutes and an hour long. The show is on various streaming services, including the CW, which is a collaboration between WarnerMedia and the CBS Entertainment Group.

What’s It About?

Stargirl centres around the title character, who is an ordinary girl. Ten years ago, her father left her and her mother, and now her mother Barbara has remarried. Pat Dugan, Courtney’s new stepfather, tries to connect with her, but she resents him for moving everyone to Blue Valley. She also struggles to get along with her new stepbrother Mike and get through her first day at school. However, Courtney gets her opportunity for revenge on one of the school bullies when she discovers a mysterious staff in her basement and uses it to ruin his dad’s car in a prank gone wrong. Courtney’s stepfather is not happy, but he reveals that he is Stripesy, Starman’s sidekick, and the staff is Starman’s Cosmic Staff. Now, it’s time for Courtney to decide if she’s ready to join the world of superheroes.

As this main plot progresses, the show also features flashbacks to the destruction of the Justice Society of America by the Injustice Society of America. With almost all the JSA heroes killed, except for Stripesy, Courtney faces extreme pressure to establish a new JSA with her friends’ help. Otherwise, the ISA will continue to terrorise both JSA survivors and ordinary citizens.

Who Plays Who?

Brec Bassinger, whose previous roles were on Bella and the Bulldogs, The Haunted Hathaways, and All Night takes centre stage as Courtney Whitmore and Stargirl. Amy Smart, Pat Dugan, and Trae Romano act as her family members. Some of her friends and fellow JSA members include Yvette Monreal as Yolanda Montez and Anjelika Washington as Beth Chapel. Villains include Jake Austin Walker as Henry King Jr., Meg DeLacy as Cindy Burman, and Christopher James Baker as Henry King Sr. Watch out (or listen) for Lou Ferrigno Jr.’s guest appearances, Joel McHale, Cynthia Evans, and Jim Gaffigan.

If you missed DC’s Stargirl as it premiered in the summer of 2020, there’s still plenty of time to catch it on the CW. Choose your favourite JSA character, pop some popcorn, and get excited about the second season.

Happy viewing!

I've always loved to write, but I'd never want to be famous. So, I write as Jessica A. over here at ADDICTED. You can think of my like Carmen Sandiego, you trust me, but where in the world am I?
