Canada’s Most Imaginative Bartender

If you are wondering about the best and most creative gin cocktails, then look no further than Canada’s Most Imaginative Bartender competition.

Presented by Bombay Sapphire Gin, Canada’s Most Imaginative Bartender brings together mixologists from around the country to see who can make the most creative and delicious gin based cocktail.

When I sat down to speak with Alex Day, the man behind NYC’s Death & Co cocktail bar and also one of the judges, he told me that he’s looking for 3 things in particular.

Creativity

“The cocktail needs to be something that is almost beyond imagination.”

Alex told me that he wants the contestants to make things that make him think “damn, I should have thought of that”

Taste

It really goes without saying that the drink should taste amazing. Not only that, it should also be complex and have layers to it, to balance it out and also make it stand out.

The Story

When it comes to selling anything, the story is always a big part. The bartender should showcase what brought him or her to making that exact drink, and why it matters.

Now I bet you’re thinking, this is all great but I’d want to make my own cocktail and see how it fares. Well, I got to do just that.

With a little advice from Alex, I faced off against other members of the media to see who among us would be the most imaginative media bartender.

While I had a wonderful time, and focused on having fun, I oddly enough, didn’t win. Shocking right?

My drink featured Bombay Sapphire, muddled cucumber and basil, soda water, lime, and a raspberry for garnish. It was a good effort but nothing compared to the winning drink, from the pro.

The title of Most Imaginative Bartender went to Calgary cocktail slinger Timo Salimaki of The Living Room Restaurant and Bar.

Timo will go on to represent Canada at the global finals in Laverstoke, UK in August.

His winning recipe “The Mirepoix Experience” was an absolute knockout. Check it out here:

  • 2oz Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin
  • 0.5oz Cointreau
  • 1.75oz Spiced Mirepoix Tincture
  • 0.5oz Ginger Syrup
  • 0.5oz Lemon Juice
  • 2 dashes Bittercube Orange

What cocktail would you make? Do you think you can measure up to Canada’s Most Imaginative Bartender?

Regardless, make sure to have fun, be with friends, and always make sure to use quality liquor. Oh and please drink responsibly. We are all adults.

So here’s to you, to the winner, and to summer. Cheers!
