Ask your #WCW with NJ Taylor

Our #womancrushwednesday this week is up and coming pop singer NJ Taylor!

Hailing from Montreal, Quebec, NJ’s grew up with music all around her. “My mother is a classically trained pianist. As a result, I was brought up surrounded by music,” NJ says. “Early on, I was involved in music, acting and dance amongst other things.  I took jazz dance classes for few years and I studied drama throughout high school.” NJ went on to study multiple languages in university. The multilingual artist speaks and is able to sing in Italian, Spanish; French and English.

While jazz and classical music were her first inspirations, pop was always her first love. “It’s what inspired me to love music. It never was a question of what genre I would go into” she says. “I love what pop songs talk about — the substantial ones that have more of a story line and yet they are fun and upbeat.” Her love of pop has now translated into a promising career, and NJ is intent increasing her pop army. With the release of her self-titled debut EP, the singer/songwriter is well on her way to making that happen.

The self-titled EP was made with the help of her initial army recruits: Los Angeles-based co-writer Adien Lewis, co-producer Ghislain “Gee” Brind’Amour (Rihanna, Karl Wolf, Victoria Duffield) and arranger Shahe Sinanoglu (Karl Wolf). It was mastered by Gene Grimaldi (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj).  Her single, “So You” has racked up 130,000 collective views on YouTube views for its lyric and music videos, placed in numerous songwriting competitions, and received airplay all over the U.K.

It’s the follow-up single “Pop Army”, however, that is the biggie.  “It’s an homage to pop music and great pop figures. I was especially inspired by Madonna, Michael Jackson and ABBA for this song,” NJ says. Top charting UK DJ Cutmore has done a remix for the track as well as the top Mexican DJ J Zuart. Take a listen below!

Not one to be held back by one genre, NJ will be making her pop songs available acoustically, with a stripped down EP coming out this summer.

Read on to see what this edgy beauty thinks of love and romance:

What is the first thing that you notice about a potential love interest?

On a physical aspect, his eyes and his smile and how tall he is…I have a thing for tall guys. On a mental aspect, how genuine and how smart he is.

What is your ideal first date/ what’s the best date you’ve ever been on?

I always thought I would want to do something different and adventurous on a first date such as zip lining but in the end I think I prefer something casual, nothing too elaborate. I don’t like going for dinner on a first date unless I already know I really like the guy. The best date I’ve been on was also the most awkward one; he brought me to see a comedy show. Great idea but again it’s a bit much for a first date. At the same time I feel that if you’re really truly interested in the person, anything would be great.

What’s your instant deal breaker?

Someone who’s cocky confident, a mister know it all.

If there was one piece of advice you could give to other men/women out there, what would it be?

Don’t ever settle down. Be with someone because you are truly in love and not because it’s convenient. Listen to you heart and not your head. Love is not logical!

How do you keep the romance alive in your relationship?

I’m not currently in a relationship but I think what’s important is to always keep it fun and interesting.
