Ask your #WCW with Melissa Bel

This week we find ourselves crushing on singer Melissa Bel!

Melissa Bel is a Canadian-born pop-soul artist currently residing in the U.K.  She could sing before she could even talk, showing her aptitude for music at a very young age. Once Melissa picked up the guitar, her fate was sealed; music was her destiny. At 18 years old, when most teens were heading off to college, Melissa released her first album Brave. The title was beyond appropriate, serving not only as a reminder of what she was doing, but as a promise to herself. In that moment she knew that her life would be anything but traditional, and music would forever be part of the path she would follow.

From that moment on, Melissa never looked back. Her follow-up records Distance and Don’t Forget to Breathe helped carve her place in Canada’s music industry. She’s opened for Canadian musical heavy-hitters like Tegan and Sara and Juno Award winner Matthew Good, and has cultivated an incredible live sound.
Now at only 27-years-old, Bel has released her fourth album, In The Light, an album that drives from the listeners ears right into their hearts. For this record, Melissa worked with Canadian music producer Justin Gray (Joss Stone, John Legend, Mariah Carey) and co-writers Drew Lawrence (‘Jar of Hearts’ by Christina Perri) and Ryan Cabrera.
In The Light is a musical storytelling of how Bel found her current love – a whirlwind romance that began in Las Vegas in 2015 and whisked her away to the picturesque countryside in England, where she currently lives. From her infectious contemporary pop sound, mixed with bluesy undertones and emotional lyricism – Bel masterfully illustrates her journey and the magical moments that led her to take a chance on love.

“‘In The Light’ comes from a very personal, very real place, and I think that will resonate with listeners. It definitely takes you through the ups and downs of what it’s like to find that profound, true love that everyone dreams about finding.”

Take a listen to the first single from In the Light “Stay gone” and you’ll see what we mean.

When we heard Melissa’s story of finding love in one of the most unlikeliest of places, we knew she needed to be a #womancrushwednesday.

What is the first thing that you notice about a potential love interest?

The immediate, natural chemistry.

What is the best piece of romance advice you have ever received?

Find someone who is F*** YES about you and make sure you’re F*** YES about them.

What’s the strangest thing you have ever done to get a love interest’s attention?

Written a song about them and played it to them over FaceTime a couple weeks after meeting.

Describe your love life in one word

How do you keep the romance alive in your relationship?

By having fun doing simple, everyday things together like cooking, watching movies or going for a run, because life can’t always be crazy and exciting! Also by doing sweet things for each other, like I’ll make Alex’s favorite snack for when he gets home from work or I’ll get into my car to a full tank of gas (spoiled!).
