Ask your #WCW with Caren

You may be asking yourself, does Nadia just stack these WCW interviews with awesome ladies that she knows?  Well you’d be right, because I do, and I’m not at all sorry about it. The lastest in my awesome musically talented friend features is singer-songwriter Caren.

Nee Sharon Nutzati, Caren is a Toronto based musician with a golden voice and a beautiful sound. While she may be sweet, Sharon is also sassy as hell. She crafted her sound in dive bars and coffee shops, learning the art of stage banter and how to clap back at hecklers with style.  Sharon released a solo album under her own name, and spent 4 years touring across Canada and gracing festival stages.

Since then Sharon took on a new musical identity, adopting the moniker Caren and adding a floaty yet feisty pop vibe to her sound.  In her music you can hear incredible Canadian female musical influences like Feist, Joni Mitchell and Kathleen Edwards. Caren worked with producer (and former MCM!) Devon Lougheed (Hey Ocean, Altered By Mom, Smashing Satellites, Bad Pop) on her brand new self-titled EP (out October 13th). I’ve snuck in a listen, and let me tell you, it’s pretty rad. Soulful, yet upbeat, folky with an addictive dose of pop and all around stunning, Caren the album is as awesome as Caren the singer.  Take a listen to the lead single “Teach Me” and you’ll see what I mean!

Alright guys, crush on over with us. Read what’s up with Caren’s love life below!

What is the best date you’ve ever been on?

Best date I’ve ever been on just included a lot of food. We first met for dinner at one of my favourite ramen spots on Queen W, then we went for drinks and dessert somewhere and ended up at my favourite diner on Dundas to eat even more food. The conversation went from funny superficial getting-to-know-each other stuff, to pretty personal topics and we got to know a lot about each other on that first date. Plus the amount of deep fried pickles I ate was quite remarkable.

What’s your instant deal breaker?

The minute someone tells me I have to change something about my personality/behaviour/etc I just call it quits. I am super comfortable with who I am and I’m not about to change for someone else.

What is the best piece of romance advice you have ever received?

If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else? – RuPaul

What’s the strangest thing you have ever done to get a love interest’s attention?

When I was younger I’d do this silly thing that is so embarrassing. I’d be chatting with a friend and my then potential love interest would come strolling by and I would talk myself up super loud in front of them, as if they would come over to me and be like “OH you do THIS? That sounds SO COOL! We should date.” I was young and naive, but I was called out on it a bunch and haven’t done it since.

How do you keep the romance alive in your relationship?

I cook for them. Anytime I want to say thank you or sorry or if we haven’t been spending too much time together I make some comfort food. The best is when you cook together and then forget about the dishes until the next day.
