This week our #mancrushmonday is musical chameleon and renaissance man John Orpheus.
Based in Toronto, Orpheus is best known as the former front man of The Hippy Mafia, the group conceived by Happy Mondays drummer Gaz Whelan. Previous musical incarnations found Orpheus joining Canadian singer/songwriter Danny Michel’s band, two-time JUNO Award nominee Alysha Brilla’s band, as well as leading his own rap metal outfit Jen Militia. Not one to restrict himself to one art form, Orpheus has also produced a film and accompanying album, both entitled John Orpheus Is Dead, and published Molasses, his first work of fiction. Now Orpheus is back in the Toronto music scene with his latest collective, the Molasses Soul Band, whose musical stylings can be experienced during their residency The Painted Lady in Toronto, where they’ll performing material from their in-the-works debut album. And if that wasn’t enough, Orpheus released his killer track and music video “Dennis Rodman”, coinciding with Toronto hosting the recently NBA All Star game. Check it out here:
“The experience of being a part of The Hippy Mafia changed me dramatically. John Orpheus came out of that in part because I’d been thinking a lot about something Oscar Wilde once said, ‘Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.’ After a while, John Orpheus just became me. I grew into that skin.”
He adds, “I’ve been on a journey, and now I’m back to where I started, musically, geographically, and emotionally.”
Eloquent, edgy and oh so intriguing, we were thrilled to chat with Orpheus about love and romance. Take a read below!
