Addicted’s guide to Fan Expo

You may look at me and think “wow, she doesn’t seem like the type to go to an event like FanExpo” and frankly, you’d be right. But that hasn’t stopped me from going to this FanExpo, ComiconAnime North and multiple other comic book, video game, film and all other manner of nerdom events. While I may not be the typical attendee, and I’m going more to spend time with my awesome younger brother, over the years I’ve come to find these events interesting, fun and entertaining. Why do you ask? Well let me tell you! Here is my guide to what I loved about the 21st edition of FanExpo.

1. Cosplay is awesome!

I am absolutely fascinated by cosplay. The efforts that people go to in order to replicate and personlize these incredible costumes is amazing, and awesome to look at!  From comic book characters to cartoon heroines, aliens and monters to clothing from a time gone by, there’s no shortage of entertainment in the cosplay world at Fan Expo.

2. Meeting/seeing emerging and established comic talent

Whether you want to meet your comic book creating heroes who have line ups to meet them, or you want to roam the aisles looking for the next big thing in comic books, the world of comics is your oyster. It’s also very cool to see so many talented artists in one room, supporting, admiring and learning from each other.

3. Random celebrity sightings

This year’s fan expo included appearances by Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Rupert Grint (Harry Potter films), Mike Tyson (Heavyweight Champion of the World), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Jason Momoa (Batman v. Superman) and so many more. It’s pretty cool to watch these actors who are so admired and revered by their fans, interact with those fans, and literally make their days, maybe even their lives.

4. There’s some really cool stuff to buy

People come from far and wide to sell their wares at Fan Expo. From expertly crafted jewelry to elaborate and accurate costumes, it’s a shopper’s paradise – a very eccentric shopper that is.

5. Reliving your childhood and watching everyone else relive theirs

Perhaps my favorite part of a Fan Expo experience is how everyone who comes let’s their inner child run free. Reliving your memories through the movies, comics and books you grew up loving is a wonderful thing, and to be surrounded by people doing the exact same thing is pretty cool, and it’s a great energy to be around.

So next year, just open your eyes, open your mind and enjoy the experience that is Fan Expo!
